We are attending a wedding in Verbier the first week of December (we will be there 4 nights - Saturday to Wednesday Nov 30-Dec 4). We have 3 days each for before and after the wedding to do some travel. Need assistance in narrowing down choices.
Thinking of flying into Zurich and taking to the train to Lucerne to spend 3 nights there (Nov 27-30) . Any suggestions on day trips from there or things to do in the city? Other thoughts were Interlaken or Laussane?
Planning to take a day trip to Montreux from Verbier to do Christmas market/Chateau de Chillon.
After Verbier, we would like to spend 3 nights in Italy (Dec 4-7). We are choosing between Florence, Rome or Venice. I have been to all three but never in the winter so I'm at a loss of what would be the best option. Just want to make one stop since we are crunched for time and don't want to spend the majority of it traveling.
Also, educate me on Swiss travel pass, is it worth it for our time there?
Suggestions welcome for itinerary, accommodations, sights. Help!!
You are going to Verbier and you are not skiing. Hmm.
In Luzern, take a boat ride to Vitznau and ride the Rigi Bahn to the top of the mountain. It is included with the Swiss Travel Pass.
It will take 4 1/2 hours to get to Le Chable where you get a bus or lift to Verbier. That is unless you decide to take the day and travel by a scenic route via Interlaken and Montreux.
I have been to Venice in December and I enjoyed it. Tourist hoards will be at a minimum. You may encounter Acqua Alta. Takes 7 hours from Le Chable. Same travel time to Rome. Florence is 6 hours. That is all based on the current Italian train schedules, as they are not out yet for December. Decision may lie in how your return flights. Rome you may have a direct flight, bu Venice and Florence require a connection.
If you go with the Swiss Travel Pass, you need an 8-day and it will cover all your travel in Switzerland. On Dec 4, it will get you as far as Domodossola, Italy.
