Venice to Zermatt - Sunday, Aug 18th

Dear all

I have a 11 night trip to Italy and Switzerland planned. Italy part ends in Venice

  1. I go from Venice to Zermatt and stay overnight in Zermatt to take the Glacier express the following am down to Andermatt(resrevation is made)
  2. Next three nights i am at Wengen(booking done) but need to plan what to do around there
  3. Last night in Lucerne and train direct to Zurich airport following am

Main question is, how do i get to Zermatt? SBB trains take about 10+ hours which is pretty much the whole day.. Flying to zurich and then train will take similar time due to airport waits etc and also cost more $$... I searched forums but did not find any recent posts related to this. Has anyone done this or have a great suggestion?

My suggestion is to break the journey into 2 segments, with an overnight on the way.

You will have to break up the trip from Venice to Zermatt by staying somewhere half way there if you don't want to spend a whole day on the train.

This summer is difficult due to track work between Milan and Switzerland. Even when the work is done, it is still a 7 hour train ride at best.

I really see no reason to go to Zermatt for only one night, then get up the next morning and take a train out of town. As far the Glacier Express goes, there is really nothing special about the scenery from Brig to Andermatt. Yes, you already paid for a seat reservation, but a night in a hotel Zermatt is also expensive.

Better is to go from Venice to Andermatt and spend the night there. It is a scenic rail journey in its own right. Then to Wengen the next day.

thanks all for u suggestions... i am deciding to break up my stay with a milan overnight and next then go next morning to Zermatt

Hi all

After going through the maps and understanding further, i am thinking of foregoing the zermatt to andermatt glacier express seat reservations of about 200 CHF for four people but instead spend another night in venice before doing the overnight in milan and then to wengen....

I will have to do a few cancellations and re-bookings..

Any thoughts or suggestions appreciated
