Venice to Lauterbrennan train options

We are planning our first trip to Lauterbrennan this March, flying into Venice first. Was looking at Bernina but I now realize that getting from Venice to Tirano to Chur to take the Bernina Express will be impossible to do in one day so I’ve given up on that.. What is the best/fastest (and most scenic) way to get to Lauterbrennan from Venice. I’ve looked and it’s confusing me :( I would appreciate your help.
Thank you

The most direct route with least changes and shortest time — Leave on the 11:48 Venezia to Milano Centrale > Spiez > Interlaken Ost > Lauterbrunnen arriving at 6:56 pm. It’s 7 hours 8 minutes.

If you want to get to Lauterbrunnen in daylight and do the more scenic route, it takes an extra 90 min.
The 5:39 am to Milano Centrale > Lugano > Luzern > Interlaken Ost > Lauterbrunnen arriving at 2:26 in the afternoon. — Total of 8 hrs 47 minutes

Use the SBB app or website SBB.ch/en for times and tickets. Make sure you spell “Lauterbrunnen” correctly when looking. The Venice train station is called Venezia S.Lucia

Going via the Bernina route and then the Brünig is an extremely scenic way to do it, but not the fastest or cheapest because it really needs an overnight with the shortish days in March.

Venezia Santa Lucia to Milano Centrale (high speed), to Titano and the bottom of the Bernina Express route. If you want the most convenient times take the regional trains - same time, same route, same views, every hour - if the fancy Bernina Express times or amenities don't work out or are not appealing. Then up to Chur, possibly overnighting in Pontresina, then to Luzern then the scenic Brünig via Meiringen (of Sherlock Holmes fame) to Interlaken Ost and then up the hill to Lauterbrunnen.

Best/Fastest. Most scenic. They are different.

wanderweg already gave you the best (fewest changes)/fastest via Milan/Spiez. Also a suggestion to go via Milan/Luzern for the scenic Luzern-Interlaken Express. There are other scenic routes, but they all add time and extra changes.

On the Milan/Spiez route, you could also get off at Brig and take the scenic "Loetschberger" train to Spiez. It uses an older more scenic route that uses a shorter tunnel than the main line Loetschberg Base Tunnel that goes completely under the mountains. That will add about 1 hour.

On the Milan/Luzern route, you could also change trains at Belinzona and take the "Treno Gottardo" to Luzern. Instead of taking the Gotthard Base Tunnel, which is a 20-mile tunnel completely under the Aps, it uses an older more scenic route with a shorter tunnel. That will also add about 1 hour.

All of these will get you to Lauterbrunnen in one day.

@wanderweg
Hello,
I’m curious where you see that travel time—SBB? I’m traveling from Lauterbrunnen to Venice in September and seeing an 11 hour trip via the SBB website. I did the same trip last September and it was only an 8 hour trip. I see they are working on the rails so I’m assuming that is the reason for the delay. I’m crossing my fingers that as the trip gets closer I’ll magically see that 8 hour travel time again;) 😉🙏

It appears that there is a major repair project underway on the Simplon Tunnel until 2028. This will reduce its capacity for 6 months of the year during this period. So train schedules 6 months from now may be in flux. All those 11 hour journeys have you going to Zurich, then to Lugano and Milan. Further, 6 months out, Italian Freccia schedules may not be fully loaded.
https://www.tunnel-online.info/en/artikel/renovation-of-the-simplon-tunnel-construction-work-starts-in-february-2025-4200730.html#:~:text=Renovation%20of%20the%20Simplon%20Tunnel,its%20entire%20length%20by%202028.

So I would advise waiting a while to see if more trains are added as you get closer.

Thanks, Sam. Routes don’t actually have us going up to Zurich. It seems like the major difference from last year is longer layovers and more stops in Italy. I guess I’ll just wait and keep checking back with SBB.

Regarding Lauterbrunnen - Venice in September.

September is ages away. What you are probably seeing is incomplete schedules. What is your travel date?

Amyway, there is no need to worry about this now. This is a train, not a Taylor Swift concert.

For context: The trip planner of the SBB suffers from an extrame case of OCD. It will try to find you a route no matter what. In this case it probably does not find the fast trains as Trenitalia "hides" these until ticket sales open. So it gives you a string of slow locals in stead. You will have to wait a bit. In september it should be the normal route: Lauterbrunnen - Interlaken - Spiez - Milano - Visp. On Trenitalia I can already see Spiez - Venezia, but cannot buy tickets for it, as it is more than 6 months in the future.

Lol. Thanks, @WengenK. I know I'm jumping the gun. I'm an OCD planner. Travelling to Venice on 9/19/26. Last year I bought my tickets at the end of June. I will just sit tight and wait. Thanks, again!

Looks like on the 19th there will be normal schedule.

You should be able to book Venezia - Spiez on www.trenitalia.com in about a month or so. For the Spiez - Lauterbrunnen part just buy that at a later time from www.sbb.ch. As long as you respect the MCT (which is 3 minutes in Spiez) your connection is protected, even on separate tickets.

Thank you, WengenK!! Is it better to book through the different train companies? Last year I booked that trip entirely through SBB.

You can book the entire trip through SBB. But SBB will only let you book this when all parts are open for booking. That may lead to you not getting the cheapest advance purchase deals you could have gotten from Trenitalia.
