Using Swiss Pass on buses and metro

I did a search on the forum, but did not easily find the answer to this question.

We will be travelling in Switzerland this summer. I will have a Swiss Pass with the accompanying family pass for my children. I know this will give us free access to use buses and metro in various cities and towns. What I cannot find the answer to is how that actually works. Do we just show the pass to the driver? What about accessing the metro? How do you go through with the pass? (I am envisioning Paris and London where we have to scan through).

I would appreciate any info anyone can offer. Thanks!

The only metro in Switzerland is in Lausanne. There are no turnstiles, they do random inspections. So you just walk on the train, and if there happens to be an inspection show them your Swiss Pass. Same deal for most buses and trams in the big cities.

We visited Luzern and Klosters-Davos this past winter. Our Luzern hotel gave us a free Luzern/Lucern Visitor's Card and our Klosters hotel gave us a free Davos-Kosters Visitor's Card. The Luzern Card gave us free bus service in the central Luzern area along with various discounts. We just showed the bus driver the Card. Similarly, the Davos-Klosters gave us free bus service and free train service between Klosters and Davos. We just showed the train conductor our card.

In addition to the metro in Lausanne there are "trams" that run through cities like Zurich. They run on fixed tracks, and your SP will also cover the cost to ride them. Again, just show the driver your SP and that's all you have to do.

Michael/Edgar/Tim - Thank you for the speedy responses. I am glad to know I do not need to use the pass to obtain a separate ticket. We are very much looking forward to our trip and the wonderful Swiss Transportation system.

The Swiss Pass covers all Public Transport in Switzerland, trains, boats, rural buses and urban trams and buses.
Unlike Paris and London, there are no turnstiles, just get on.
The same applies to local transport (trams and buses), just get on any door. No need to show anything to the driver, and no need to get on at the front, you will see everybody else just getting on and off using the nearest door.
Every so often inspectors will get on and ask to see everybody's tickets. They are trained to recognise all types of ticket, including Swiss Passes. Anybody without a ticket is fined 100 Franks. They don't need to do inspections very often to make it cheaper to buy a ticket than to pay the fine.

Lausanne has a métro, Basel, Bern, Geneva and Zürich have extensive tram systems. Plus urban bus networks in most towns and suburban rail systems (S-Bahn / RER) in larger towns.

Thank you, Chris. I always appreciate reading your expert information. That is exactly the type of info that helps me be at ease during my vacation. I don't like to be caught not being sure about some of those little details.
