Two nights in Zermatt End of Sept.

We will be spending two nights in Zermatt on September 28th and 29th. Leaving on the 30th. I am looking for suggestions for our one full day in Zermatt. Are the peak 2 peak tickets available during that time period? Do we need to purchase tickets ahead of time? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hike, walk the village, enjoy tranquility, dine at bistros and cafes.
Gaze at the Matterhorn.

I was there for a couple of days about 15 years ago. I appreciated the little museum dedicated to the people who first climbed (and mostly died on) the mountain. It was sobering but also very interesting.
It was nice to be in a car-free town.
And the Matterhorn is quite beautiful if the clouds cooperate!

My trip was actually 16 years ago (where did the time go?!?), in ski season. The small climber’s museum was definitely a significant visit.

Although we stayed at a much humbler, cheaper place in town, we had dinner one night at the 2222 Grand Hotel (at 2,222 meters high), taking the Gornergrat train to get there and back. Looking online now, it appears it’s now the Riffelalp 2222 resort with many gourmet restaurants. Not sure if you’re staying in a luxury place already, but our dinner splurge was the non-skiing highlight of that trip.

Thank you all for your suggestions. Fingers cross the sky will be clear on our one full day in Zermatt. No we are not staying in any of the luxury hotels. Zermatt and Geneva are our last stops before heading home to Canada. We are looking forward to doing a bit of hiking while in Zermatt. Not lung busting strenuous though.

Don't do the Hornli hut hike. That is definitely a "lung buster" :) If you like riding bikes I would highly recommend renting one of the Electric mountain bikes they have available at several of the bike shops around town. They allow you to explore area's much quicker and with much less effort than hiking. There's a nice, fairly steep little road that leads up to Furi and then Schwarzee that would otherwise take several hours to hike. On the bikes it takes about 20-30 minutes. There are literally hundreds of miles of trails to explore and hiking will only allow you to see so much in a couple of days. The bike will allow you to see so much more of the Zermatt area, IMO. Oh yeah, when hiking and you see the signs for the different trails and the estimated times to reach different locations, keep in mind this is "swiss time". We found that Americans are not Alpine climbers and are much slower. Add an hour..... :)

I am definitely looking forward to exploring the Zermatt area. Thank you all for your suggestion. Due to our short time in Zermatt I do like the suggestion of renting an E bike to cover a little more ground. (O;

I think everybody in Switzerland are born with bigger lungs. We had the entire "Swiss family Robinson" and their 3 young kids blowing by us on our way up to the Hornli hut! LOL....That "little" 3 mile hike is no joke!

If you're going to rent the E-bikes, get to Intersport early. They run out of rental E-bikes quickly.
