Hi! Would love some help with 2 day itinerary for the weekend of November 20-22. We are a family of 4 (adult children 18 and 20) and 2 other young adults. Arriving Friday morning in Zurich and staying in Lucerne for 2 nights and flying out of Zurich Sunday evening. We will likely have a car. We’d like to do a boat ride on Lake Lucerne and possibly Rigi Kulm We’d really love to do night sledding but I think we are too early for that. Maybe the fondue boat cruise or a visit to the chocolate factory? Would love to appreciate the scenery and food. Any suggestions would be welcome.
With 6 people + luggage, you’d need two vehicles. Switzerland has excellent public transportation. There is no reason to rent a car because it will prove a hindrance in Luzern. Easy to take the train from Zurich. as far as scenery, take the cog railway up Mount Pilatus and the cable cars down the other side. You can take a boat to the rail station and return to the city by bus.
I don’t know if anyone in your party would enjoy it but the Swiss Transportation Museum is very interesting. Depending on post-Luzern itinerary, rent cars as you leave or on arrival by train at your next destination .
What a fun weekend with the kids! I'd plan on Rigi rather than Pilatus that weekend, since the Pilatus cog railway usually closes for the season in November, while Rigi runs all year and you can take the boat from Lucerne to Vitznau and ride the cog railway up from there. On Sunday the Lindt Home of Chocolate in Kilchberg, just outside Zurich, makes an easy last stop before your flight. I'd check the Lake Lucerne fondue cruise dates now since the winter sailings fill up.
