I will be based in Geneva for 3 weeks. I have downloaded the SBB app for transport, but it asks for a registration number which I have no idea how to find on the app. Does anyone have advice? I must be doing something wrong.

Try establishing a Swisspass account. Confusingly, it is not a pass, but your SBB account.

Create an account on www.sbb.ch and after you have done so log in using the same credentials in the app.
This account is confusingly called "Swiss Pass" account, as it is tied to the "Swiss Pass" which is a domestic smart card, that is used by the locals to store commuter passes on.
(And yes, calling that the Swiss Pass was a stupid idea)

yes, I have discovered that to be the case. I am just going to wait until I get to Geneva and try to figure it out.
