Trip to Lucerne / Como

My husband and I will be celebrating our first anniversary and plan to go to Lucerne(where we won’t stay long , will arrive first at Zurich where I’ll figure will do some shopping. We’ll stay at Bürgenstock And then we are thinking where else we could go.
I thought that we could visit Como or Milan but we might be renting a car and he is hesitant about driving longer distances . I saw somebody mentioned she went from Lugano to Como in a short time , that’s why I thought it would be worth it to go there. Do you think it’s better to take a train? Where do I book ? Do you know how long would be to take the train .
Is it easy to cross the border?
Thank you !

How many nights do you have planned on the ground, i.e., not including the night you are flying?

Swiss trains generally have no need to book in advance. You can look at the schedules and prices at www.sbb.ch/en. If your plan is just to visit Zurich and Luzern, with maybe a side trip to Como or Milan and back, do not rent a car, it will be a pain to find and pay for parking. Switzerland has the best public transportation in the world, and it will take you where cars cannot go, like mountain tops. Better think about what kind of transport card you want based on how long you will be there and where you want to go.

Zürich airport and Zürich city centre are two different places. If you are flying in to Zürich airport, that has its own rail station, and you can get to Luzern from there in 70 minutes. Do your shopping in Luzern.

Do not rent a car, as the others say, it will just sit in paid parking in Luzern while you go round the town, on lake boats and up mountains.

I thought that since we will be close to ITALY we should visit Como or Milan . . . . Is it easy to cross the border?

Lake Como is too far for a day trip. You not only have to get there, you need to get somewhere on the lake. Como town is just the access point.
In Luzern, you are equidistant from all borders, Germany, Italy and France. There are no border checks.

I can’t wait to stay at the resorts in the mountains !! I know the view will be amazing.

Luzern is not IN the mountains, it is on the edge.

If you want to be IN the mountains, go to the Jungfrau region. Or, if you just have 1 day spare for a trip outside Luzern, take the train to Interlaken and back again.

I too wanted to see Como when in Switzerland, but logistics made a quick trip illogical. If you want to see a pretty lake consider Lakes Geneva, Lucerne or Thun.

The Buergenstock resort sits on a ridge high above the Vierwaldstaettersee, as pretty a lake as there is. You get there by a lake boat from Luzern, then a funicular direct to the hotel.
