Travelling From Zurich - Murren - Munich

Hello! First time posting here, I've definitely appreciated all the positive feedback I've seen on this forum as I have searched it over the past number of months. It's great seeing people engage in such wonderful ways!

I'm planning a trip to Murren and Munich for late May early June. We're flying into Zurich and wanting to travel from there to Murren, where we are spending 10 days. After that we are travelling to Munich for 5 days and flying back home from there. What great advice does this forum's members have to offer?

I'm in particular wondering what is my best way to travel between these stops. Swiss Flexi Pass? How do I get to Munich? The flexipass does not cover that does it? I understand getting to Murren no problem from Zurich, I just can't seem to find how best to get to Munich from Murren.

THANKS!

Ray,

The trips you've mentioned are all very easily done by rail. To begin with, are you planning to travel directly from the airport in Zürich to Mürren, or will you be staying in Zürich a few days?

If you're travelling direct, there's a rail station at the airport and the trip to Mürren will be about 3H:10M with 3-4 changes, depending on which train you connect with. You'll likely change at Bern and definitely again at Interlaken Ost. From there you'll take the small Berner Oberland train to Lauterbrunnen, a short Cable Car ride to Grütschalp and then a small mountain railway to Mürren. When you buy your ticket at the airport, specify Mürren as your destination and the ticket will include all modes of transport.

The trip to Munich is also very easy. You'll first have to travel from Mürren to Interlaken Ost, where you'll connect with the train to Munich. One of the easiest trips appears to be a departure at 08:00, arriving Munich at 15:11 (time 7H:11M, one change). There are some shorter trips but those involve walking and a Bus, so the departure I mentioned would be a bit easier.

I'll leave the question on the Swiss Flexi-Pass to the others, as I'd have to spend some time working on it. Which Pass to get (if any) will depend to some extent on what you plan on doing in that area. If you plan on taking the trip to the Jungfraujoch, you could also look at the regional passes such as the Jungfrau VIP Pass.

Happy travels!

Ray, you really don't need any type of Swiss pass or card if all you are doing is a round-trip from Zurich to Muerren. The cost is about 160CHF. The bigger question, with regards to some type of Swiss pass or card, is - how much travel do you intend to do while in Muerren. Will you be going to the tops of the Jungfrau and Schilthorn? Seems if you are spending 10 days there, you will be traveling somewhat as Muerren is not that large. Round trip fare from Muerren to the Jungfraujoch is 206.20CHF. Round trip to the Schilthorn from Muerren is 77CHF. Now, you are definitely in Swiss pass or card territory.

Two Swiss cards I would suggest considering. 1) the Swiss Card. This card is designed for the traveler entering and exiting Switzerland and going to only one main location. You can travel elsewhere in Switzerland but you are basing in one location. Your complete travel to and from this location (in this case Zurich/Muerren) is completely covered. Your exit (Muerren/Zurich or Basel) is also completely covered. While you are in Muerren, the card becomes a 1/2-fare card. All transportation fares are covered 50%. The card is good everyday for 30 days. Cost on www.sbb.ch is 199CHF.

2) The Swiss 1/2-fare card. Half-fare on all Swiss transportation. This includes 50% off on the trains to the Jungfraujoch and the gondola to the Schilthorn. This card is good everyday for 30 days. Cost on www.sbb.ch is 120CHF.

Here's a link to the page on www.sbb.ch http://www.sbb.ch/en/leisure-holidays/holidays--short-breaks-in-switzerland/swisstravelsystem.html Overall, the costs between the two cards will be the same. The difference is 79CHF which is about 1/2 the roundtrip fare to/from Zurich/Muerren. With one card, this trip is covered. With the other, it's 50%.

With the exception of about a half-dozen cities just outside the border of Switzerland, all Swiss pass and cards are good only in Switzerland. On your journey out of Switzerland to Munich, just show your card to the ticket agent and they will make the fare adjustment.

Wow! Thanks for the incredibly detailed responses, they are greatly appreciated. Once landing in Zurich I will be heading straight to Muerren from the airport.

While in Muerren I am planning to do some small trips out from there, which makes the Swiss Card sound like a very appropriate fit.

Couple of questions then regarding the Swiss Card. Am I best off buying the card in advance online, or simply purchasing it when I arrive at the airport?

And travelling through to Munich would be as simple as showing my card to a ticket agent at the station, paying the additional fare charges and following that route all the way to Munich?

Thank-you for all your kind help!
