My family and I are planning to drive from Germany to Italy in July. We are starting in Cologne, Germany and planning to drive to Lucerne, Switzerland for 2 nights. From there we are driving to Nice, France for 3 nights. Then onto Cinque Terre, Italy for 2 nights. Are we allowing ourselves enough time in each location? How long is the drive from Lucerne to Nice? Any recommendations on this itinerary?

Assume you are OK with the international drop fees and your rental agency is cool with you dropping the car in Italy, know about picking up a Swiss vignette as you enter Switzerland, and have International Drivers Permit for each driver.

That number of nights is fine in each location for Rick's travel style, but we would usually be coming from a shorter distance and not have such a short or exhausted arrival day. Since each leg is a full day's drive, I think you'll want to add an extra night to any one or all of the above locations.
