Traveling late December

My husband and I are considering traveling to Switzerland between Christmas and the first week of January for a few days. We are ok with the cold. How is train travel during this time? What are suggested town(s) to stay in/things to must see if we have 2-3 days to explore?

Hi Sarah,

Train travel is still efficient during this time of year in Switzerland. You can have the option to stay in the city of Lucerne or Bern for a few days. The Berner Oberland is a wonderful area too but much more enjoyable in summer then winter.

Weather can impact train travel more so than during the summer. You just live with it. The big issue can be ice on the overhead power lines. One day in Germany a week before Christmas we hit a day of fog, mist, freezing rain, and near total disruption of the train schedule in our travel area. A two hour train ride turned into a five hour ordeal but it has happened before and the Germans know how to handle it very well. Just have to have a little patience. In our two weeks over the Christmas/New Years period that was the only day with problems. Rest of the time, the trains were great.
