Traveling from Thun to Murren . Recommendations

We are traveling mid-day from Thun to Murren. Should we stop in Lauterbrunn for a few hours first and then go to hotel in Murren. Or should we go directly to Murren unload suitcase then just explore Murren ( since it may be 3or 4:00). Then explore Lauterbrunn the next day. We leave for Zurich early the following day. Any recommendations on what to do. We aren’t stronger hikers but like to walk and explore.

I would continue to Murren so you can offload your luggage and visit the Coop grocery store in Murren for snacks and supplies. Then, you can comfortably explore the Trummelbach and Staubbach waterfalls of the Lauterbrunnen Valley which you can’t do with your suitcase.

So all you have in Murren is an afternoon from 3:00 pm and then you're leaving for Zurich the next morning? Or you mean you have one full day in Murren? Regardless, spend your time in Murren, no point in wasting time in Lauterbrunnen.

There is nothing of interest in actual Lauterbrunnen village, it's a trafficy, crowded mix of souvenir shops and below average restaurants. What's beautiful is the valley beyond the village, but by 4 pm the sun will be too low and the steep cliffs will make it shaded, so it's not an ideal time. Just go up to Murren, enjoy your late afternoon there and then for your full day do activities around Murren depending on your preferences. With only 1 full day + an extra evening, you don't have time to go elsewhere.

My opinion is to do everything you want to do in Mürren - there is a lot to do, including things you may not have thought of - and when (if) you have run out of things to do is the time to cast your net further, including Lauterbrunnen.

You won't believe the views from Mürren.

One pleasant surprise for us in Mürren was taking the funicular up to Allmendhubel. There are lots of cows there, a whimsical flower and Swiss life themed playground, several trails, and a nice restaurant with beautiful views and delicious house made fruit desserts. ( We tried both the apricot and plum cakes.)

It was really peaceful there, and we visited it three times during our week in Mürren. We had the Berner Oberland pass, so it was easy and included.

Also, in Mürren I would recommend Cafe Liv and In Sport for a coffee break. Cafe Liv has delicious cakes, and In Sport has longer hours, and rafts beautiful cappuccinos. We also enjoyed apple strudel and hazelnut cake on the patio of Hotel Edelweiss near sunset…the pink glow on the snowy tops of the Eiger, Monch, and Jungfrau were stunning!

The walk downhill to Gimmelwald is one of Rick’s favorites, and about 30 minutes from Mürren. We walked down on the paved road, and took the cable car back up after exploring Gimmelwald. It was a fairly steep descent, and I would not try it if there is snow or ice. We just had to avoid a lot of sheep droppings as we went down the path. It was quiet and pretty, and you could go there and back via cable car if you wanted to explore but not do the switchbacks down or up if it’s slippery.

Enjoy!
