travel with a view from Basel to Milan

I understand there are 2 routes from Basel to Milan. The Swiss train site suggested going through Goeschenen. It seems super expensive to do this. We are then going to Rome, all in one day. Suggestion for best view and best price?

Either route will include a couple of hours of mountain scenery, so choose the departure time that works better for you for this 8-hour trip. Either depart at 6:30 or 12:30 with one connection in Milan (border crossing at Iselle) or at 8:00 or 10:00 with connections in both Zurich and Milan (border crossing at Chiasso). Price should not be much different either way. If you're ready to lock in advance discount tickets, you can buy the first leg through SBB's Supersaver page and the Milan-Rome ticket at www.trenitalia.com (try for print-at-home, not pick up in station).

If you are going to Roma, you already have a very long day ahead of you. I'd pick the fastest train, and do not care much about scenery. Trains from Basel to Italy to either via the Lötschber and Simplon tunnels, or via the Gotthard tunnel.

The fastest high-speed trains between Milano and Roma take slightly less than 2 hours, most take around 3.5 hours.

For best price, buy a ticket Basel-Milano Centrale with SBB, and a separate ticket Milano Centrale-Roma Termini with Treinitalia.
