Travel Options: Zurich<=>Grindelwald=>Jungfraujoch & Eismeer

A group of 4 of us will be climbing the Monch, Jungfrau, and Eiger (via Mittellegi Ridge) the first week of August. We fly in/out of Zurich and will be staying in Grindelwald when we're not in the mountains. The mountain routes will require two separate trips through the Eiger on the cog railway to Jungfraujoch station on one trip and Eismeer station on the other.

Some in our group have talked about renting a car to get to Grindelwald, but I think a train is the way to go. I think it will be easier, and probably faster and cheaper. I've been trying to sort out the options available, including the Half Price Card, and it's very confusing. Is there a clearly "best choice" that someone can recommend that will minimize our cost for these trips? I'm guessing that it will use the Half Price Card, but am uncertain about how best to go about making it happen. Any/all thoughts and suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
BrianO

brian,

Renting a car wouldn't be my suggestion as the trains in Switzerland are fast and efficient. As you're mostly going to be hiking, the car would sit in the lot gathering dust and rental charges like a useless boat anchor.

If you need information on how to get to Grindelwald by train, post another note.

Regarding the type of Swiss pass to buy, that can be a confusing question. You'll have to do the number crunching to figure out the best one for your trip specifics. You could also look at something like the Jungfrau VIP Pass which will provide coverage on that side of the valley. Hopefully some of the others will have some comments to offer on the Pass.

You said "climb". Do you mean hike or a technical ascent? I guess the choice of train vs. car would come down to what sort of equipment you need to bring, unless you can rent the gear you need.
