Does anyone have a Travel Insurance for Medical recommendation they have actually used, meaning filed a MEDICAL claim? We have had insurance in the past, but never had to use it. You don't really know how good your insurance is until you try and use it. Asking about medical, not trip cancellation, etc. We will self-insure for that. Thank you.
We have a US policy that also covers us abroad. Is that what you’re after?
You might try www.squaremouth.com and put in your parameters to see if they pop something up.
Yes. I had a small claim with my BlueCross Geoblue plan. No problems getting reimbursed for both doctor and a prescription. Claim was under $100.
Thanks. Square Mouth sells insurance, so I'm a bit skeptical of its analysis, especially since its policies rank at the top.
JKH: thanks. Did you use it is Switzerland? Asking because Blue Cross has global networks, with no in network facilities where we are going in Switzerland, including Zurich. I am wondering how that plays out.
I use Insure My Trip to compare and find policies. I have never filled a claim, so I don't have first hand experience with how the policies I purchase handle claims. But, my own research finds that most claims not paid are because the policy holder either did not understand what is/isn't covered or they didn't provide the necessary documentation.
Like any insurance, you need to understand the different scenarios that you want covered to see if the plan will work for you. Besides coverage limits and pre-existing conditions, what do you need? What type of evacuation coverage do you want? If you're admitted to hospital, do you want transportation to be covered for a family member to come to your bedside or, if traveling with someone, do you want their hotel and other expenses covered if they have to extend their stay to remain with you. These are just some of the things to consider.
Also, some medical travel policies require you insure all prepaid expenses. Using a platform like Insure My Trip or Squaremouth can help you find a company that will allow you to purchase a plan without including insuring your prepaid expenses. This can save you hundreds of dollars in premium since you plan to self insure those costs.
With regards to the ratings, I don't know about Squaremouth, but, IMO , Insure My Trip ratings are more about the purchase process, not the claim process itself. So I find the ratings useless.
Blue Cross Geo Blue . They reimbursed for a medical expense in the UK. Affordable highly recommend.
AC good to know. Thanks! Did you go to one of BCBS in network facilities?
With our experience in France, there was no looking for in-network facilities if you need medical help internationally. Frankly, when we needed assistance in France, we had to go to 3 medical facilities until we found the one that would treat us and it had nothing to do with insurance. (I probably could have called GeoBlue to get a suggestion, but the urgent situation didn't help my thinking.) It had to do with how they do things in France. There was never a topic of conversation with any facility regarding insurance. We paid cash for the treatment..one bill for the doctor, one for the facility and one for pharmacy and then sent the receipts to GeoBlue/now Global Solutions for prompt reimbursement.
