We will be spending 3 nights in Lucerne to recover from Jet lag and then off to Murren for 4 nights. We would then like to go to the Salzberg, Bertchesgarden area but are concerned about the long train or car ride to get there. Would you recommend just biting the bullet and put in an 8 hour car ride and be done with it or breaking the trip up into two manageable trips? If so can you give a recommendation of a quaint mid way point to stay the night. We really are not interested in any larger towns like innsbruck and hoping for something small, quaint, beautiful with sites of the Alps or lakes. When get up into the Salzberg area would you recommend staying in Salzberg as a base or in the Bertchesgarden area? How about the Wolfgangsee area (St. Galin)? We would then do our day trips from a central base for 4 nights. We would love to stay in Halstatt but may be too late to book a room. Any recommendations on where to stay in Halstatt?
To try and avoid the long drive to Zurich to fly home is it feasible to fly home from Salzberg.
Thanks for any help you can give. This site is a wonderful tool and has helped me immensely in the past.
Jay, I would try to visit and stay in Hallstatt. We were there in October on the GAS tour. It was so peaceful and breathtaking views. Everyone wanted to stay a second night. It was day 12 of 14 and everyone was ready for a easy lazy day. We stayed at Hotel Gruner Baum. It was right on the lake.
If you can fit it in its worth seeing.
Safe and happy travels.
Sue
I might help with you planning (finding transportation, accommodations, etc) if you spell it SALZBURG, not Salzberg.
Ouch!! OK Lee I'll take you up on that. I can use all the help I can get.
I would love to stay in Hallstatt....Any recommendations?
Any travel or itinerary help you can give is greatly appreciated.
