Travel from Murren to Lake Como

Hi all! My husband and I will be traveling from Murren to Lake Como this summer on July 7, 2019. What is the best, most efficient way to get there? We will either be staying in Bellagio or Cernobbio. Thanks so much! This is my first time to this area of Europe and I feel very overwhelmed by the train travel. So glad there is this forum!

  • Bellagio doesn't have a train line to it. You will need to take a train to Como town, then a bus or a ferry to Bellagio.
  • Cernobbio is a lot easier to get to. It is just 3 Km north of Como town and a similar distance from Chiasso (Swiss border town). Close enough to get a taxi from Como San Giovanni station.

Train from Mürren to Como is easy to look up on the SBB (Swiss Railways) website: https://www.sbb.ch/en
Enter: from Mürren, to: Como San Giovanni, and your desired time and date, then click on [Search]. It will take about 6 hours with multiple changes. the route will not be a straight line, there are too many mountains in the way.

I cannot advise on bus/ferry from Como to Bellagio, other than I know they exist.

If you choose Bellagio, you can take the train to Varenna-Esino instead of Como. It's an easy walk down the hill from the train station to the ferry terminal, and it's a short ferry ride from Varenna to Bellagio.

The number of connections between Mürren and Lake Como will probably seem daunting. You're going to be taking around 7-8 vehicles (between lifts, trains, and possibly a ferry) to get there. However, the Swiss transportation system, which you'll be on most of the way, is a wonder of efficiency. For example, going from Mürren to Interlaken Ost requires 3 vehicles - a little train, a lift, and another train - but you'll be amazed how easy it is to complete that part of the trip. However, you'll still want to pack fairly light.

Also, as you may already know, the full train schedule for your travel day isn't posted yet.

Have a great trip - I was in Mürren last summer and Lake Como the summer before, and I fell in love with both places.

Thank you, Chris and Melissa! So very helpful! I’m sure this is a very ignorant question but what is a lift exactly. Also, any idea when they’ll come out with the schedule for our dates?

a lift is also referred to as a gondola or a cable car - a large or small compartment which goes from A to B suspended from an overhead cable, usually in the mountains where the rise is sufficiently steep to prohibit other transportation.

The summer train schedules kind of dribble out. It’s not a big deal because they’ll be pretty much the same as those for winter, but I mentioned it because if you try to search now on your actual dates, you won’t see everything that will be available (especially with regional trains). Try searching on the same day of the week but in May and you’ll get a pretty good indication.
