Travel from Munich to Zermatt

Good morning all fellow travelers!

My wife and I are trying to figure out the best way to get from Munich to Zermatt this coming October. We will be finishing off 6 days in Munich ending on the 6th and we are trying to get across to Zermatt. It seems like there are not really any direct routes of travel other than driving a rental car.

Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated1

The route by public transport is Munich to Zurich to Visp to Zermatt; you have two changes on the way. The first leg (Munich to Zurich) can be by bus or direct train, with the bus being almost an hour faster. The total journey time is 7 hours 11 minutes with the bus segment or 8 hours if you go from Munich to Zurich by direct train.
