My husband and I will be driving from Hohenschwangau to Murren in late August. In looking at Google maps, it seems my route is to get to Interlaken, then Lauterbrunnen and take a train to Murren. Can anyone confirm that for me? Assuming that is correct, where do I leave my rental car in Lauterbrunnen? Is it safe to just leave it for 4 days?
Thank you.
I was just there 2 weeks ago. There is more than one way to get to Murren from Lauterbrunnen. I took the Gondola/Lift right across the street from the train station to Grutschlap and then a train waiting takes you to Murren.
this is the site car park in Lauterbrunnen

You may also want to leave car in Interlaken (it is a bigger town) and take the train from there
Hi Angela. There is a parking ramp in Lauterbrunnen. You can google it; looks like 53 francs for 4 days. Alternate is to keep driving past Lauterbrunnen (maybe 10 minutes) to Stechelberg and park in an outdoor lot at the base of the cable car - looks like 30 francs for 4 days, then take the cable car from there to Murren. Enjoy your trip!
thanks for the helpful replies. Which is easier to take luggage on? Do cable cars have room for rolling duffel luggage?
Yes, the cable cars are huge (maybe 20 people per car?) and you can take luggage easily. Enjoy your trip.
angela,
A bit more information on getting to Mürren......
There are two routes you can use and either one is good:
- Park in Stechelberg and take the Schilthornbahn Cable Car. You'll first go to Gimmelwald and then change cars for the next leg to Mürren. I've ridden with concrete hoppers in the cars so they will easily take whatever luggage you'll be carrying.
- Park in Lauterbrunnen and take the short cable car ride to Grütschalp and then the small mountain railway to Mürren (it will be waiting for the cable car with usual Swiss precision).
You can buy tickets at the rail station in Lauterbrunnen (which is across the street from the Grütschalp cable car) or at the cable car station in Stechelberg. You could also stop at the station in Interlaken and buy your tickets, but you'll need to specify which route you'll be using. The Grütschalp route is designated as "Mürren BLM" and I believe the Stechelberg route is designated as "Mürrren LSMS".
The Cable Car station in Mürren is at the opposite end of town from the station where the small railway arrives. Either way you'll have a short walk to your hotel. The Schilthornbahn Cable Car is the same one that goes to the famous Schilthorn and Piz Gloria, that was used in the filming of the James Bond movie On Her Majesty's Secret Service. It's on a peak above Mürren and the revolving restaurant is a great place to enjoy a fine meal.
Happy travels!
Yes the cable cars (Gondolas) are huge and hold WAY more than 20 people. If there is too much luggage then workers will attach a luggage rack to the gondola. The workers are quite used to dealing with lots of passengers and lots of luggage.
thank you for all the helpful information. No one replied about safety. Do these lots tend to be safe to leave a car in?
"No one replied about safety."
That may be because many here use the excellent public transit in that area, rather than rental cars. I've never had occasion to park that area, so can't offer any tips on the "safety" aspect. However I've found that Switzerland is generally a very safe country to travel in.
I used the Lauterbrunnen parking garage safely 1 time MANY years ago before I learned that trains are THE way to navigate - especially in Switzerland and doubly especially in and around Lauterbrunnen and the alpine villages.
I parked several times in the Lauterbrunnen car park. Some cars in there are for short stays, several are cars put there by local owners for days or weeks at a time. I've never had the slightest whiff of any problem there and would confidently put my car there tomorrow for a week or a month.
I have parked a couple of times in the lot at Steckelberg, never for more than an hour or two. It is completely open, and just about at the landing area for the jumpers from Mürren. I've never been landed on, nor have I ever seen anybody landed on, but I do know that not all landings go to plan and I worry that my car would be the one with a dent in the roof and I don't want that.
It is cheaper at the open lot. Personally I prefer the underground connection to the station and cable car at Lauterbrunnen, and if there is rain I can repack my car in the dry. You may prefer the other, and if it is a rental rather than it being my personal (and favourite for many years) car you may not care about a dent in the roof.
If you arriving late you may want to check the timetables. I believe the lift from Stechelberg runs later than the train via Grutschalp.
