Trains with Berner Oberland Pass

Total Train Novice Here.

We will be ending the RS Switzerland Tour in Bern and traveling to Wengen for three nights. That will give us an afternoon, 2 full days and a morning before going to Zurich to fly home. As of now I am planning to buy a Half Fare Card for travel before and after the tour, and for excursions to Mt Titlis (pre tour) and Gornergrat (during tour), and a 3 or 4 day BO Pass for our time there, but am still evaluating costs/savings.

With a BO pass, do I understand correctly that I would have free train travel from Bern to Wengen, and from Wengen to Luzern or Bern on my way to Zurich.

If I decide to go through Luzern for the scenic route, can I just purchase tickets for any of the options from Wengen on the SBB website, and not need to specifically book the Luzern Interlaken Express (Golden Pass) with a seat reservation?

And do I need to have one ticket for the free part, Wengen to Luzern, and another from Luzern to Zurich, for which I will have a Half Fare Card?

Would you advise purchasing passes on line before travel or upon arrival at Zurich airport?

Thank you, Carolyn

Yes, with a BO Pass you travel from Bern or Luzern to Interlaken for free. You do not need a ticket; you just board the train and show your BO Pass and Half Fare Card when asked.

Seat reservations on the Luzern-Interlaken Express trains are not required, but if you want to make them, you can do so on this website, selecting for “seat reservation only”.

To travel to Zurich for your flight, you decide whether you want to go via Luzern or Bern, and simply buy a ticket for that section only (Luzern to Zurich or Bern to Zurich), using the Half Fare Card discount. The Luzern route is less expensive, but takes longer.

You will also need a ticket from Zurich main station to Zurich airport on your day of flight.

So I would just buy the ticket to Zurich when I arrive at the station in either Bern or Luzern?

You could also just buy a ticket to Zurich, specify the route you want, then show your still valid BO Pass and Half Fare Card and get charged accordingly.

You do not need to be in Bern to buy a ticket Bern - Zurich, and you do not need to be in Luzern to buy a ticket Luzern - Zurich.
You can buy tickets between any origin and destination at any station. So you can buy the Luzern - Zurich or Bern - Zurich part already in Wengen.

The same applies to other excursions. If you for example want to visit the Schilthorn from Wengen you will need a ticket for the Mürren - Schilthorn part. Well, you can buy that already in Wengen.
