Trains in Switzerland

Will be arriving in Basel end of May 2026. Looking to take train from Basil to Lucerne, a few days in Lucie and then taking a train from Lucerne to Zürich. Looking at train schedule right now too early to give give me exact pricing on tickets. Trying to figure out if it would be better to buy the Swiss travel pass then pay for these two trains in addition to some other attractions. Anyone have any idea how can get an idea of price or give me a ballpark figure of price thanks.

Just look at the same routes this month and the prices will be comparable. Most trains in Europe are state-run and prices don't fluctuate as much as airlines would. It should be comparable.

Go to www.sbb.ch/en. End of May is too far away to get actual prices now, but you can look at a date nearby.

Full fare tickets in Switzerland are always the same price, but expect a couple of percent price increase for 2026. They are based on the distance traveled.

The first thing you may see is a price on a black background with a "%" sign. These are Supersaver Tickets. Ignore these as they are only good for a particular train and the price is if you buy it now. To get the full fare price, click on the red box. Next page under "Travel Options" click on "Full price" and below that click the box "Point-to-point ticket" The right will show the price. In this case, Basel to Luzern 2nd class is 36 CHF. That ticket is good on any train that day.

There is an option to travel at half price, but you must purchase a Half Fare Card which costs 120 CHF and is good for 30 days. It should be obvious that you need 240 CHF worth of tickets for you to break even, and two 36 CHF tickets is not close. The Half Fare Card also works on boats and buses and mountain lifts, so it may pay off in the end if you do enough excursions.

A 4-day adult 2nd class pass costs 295 CHF per person. This would be convenient, but the most expensive option. Further, it only gives discounts like the Half Fare Card for mountain lifts, with a few exceptions. It does cover the Rigibahn and Stanserhornbahn.

The main station is Basel SBB. That is where you get direct trains to Luzern.
