Trains in Switzerland

Hi travelers! I'm planning on taking a train from Basel to Lucerne and am wondering if there is a difference between the SBB and the RailEurope. If so, what's the difference and which is your preference. Thanks and advance and happy trails.

It's the SBB who run most of the trains in Switzerland Rail Europe is the marketing arm who will sell you tickets. The timetable is on line at www.sbb.ch/en

RailEurope is a reseller operating in North America, It only sells tickets for some trains, and for those it does sell, it often has a mark-up.
There are two trains per hour from Basel to Luzern (local spelling), at 04 and 17 minutes past the hour, and it takes just over 1 hour.

You can look up times and prices on the SBB website: https://www.sbb.ch/en/

You do NOT need to buy those tickets in advance. When you land in Basel just jump on the bus to the train station (SBB Bus) and buy your ticket there.

You should always buy your train tickets directly from the national train website if you can. RE is just a reseller who doesn't offer tix on all of the available trains...only a portion of them and usually at a higher price and a handling fee.

Hi

It might be worth checking SBB offers for international visitors like half fare card or swiss travel pass if you think you will be using the trains often.

cheers

Thanks, Phinfo. I will definitely check on that. Any money I save goes to a nicer restaurant! Cheers.
