Hi. I am hoping someone can share their experience of doing this and tell me how the passes from the 2 different countries might overlap.

This is pretty straightforward. Board train in one country, detrain in the other.
Regarding passes: If you have a Swiss Travel Pass it is valid from the border onwards, so coming from Italy you need to buy a ticket till either Domodossola or Chiasso, depending on where you enter. You can however just stay on the train. Once in Switzerland if a conductor asks to see a ticket you just show your pass.
If you have a Trenitalia pass then you can use that for the Italian part of a Italy - Switzerland train.
