Train Works near Basel in June

Hi, I am looking at train tickets to get from Zurich to Colmar France for Sunday June 7. I see that there are track works between Basel & St Louis that weekend so we’ll have to take the tram 3 to St Louis and then get the TER to Colmar. SBB says a valid SNCF ticket between Basel & St Louis gets us on Tram 3.

SBB shows this itinerary but won’t let me buy the ticket. SNCF doesn’t seem to have an option to buy “Basel” to Colmar for the afternoon train from St Louis that fits our schedule (16:30-17:05), even though if I put in St Louis to Colmar it’s there.

Should I just buy my saver ticket for Zurich to Basel SBB now, and plan to get a ticket for the rest of the trip when we get to Basel? Since the SNCF TER trains can’t sell out?

It looks like that is what you will have to do. Looks like the Supersaver ticket saves you 14.40 CHF, but you must take that particular train for the ticket to be valid. Are you OK with that?

We are at Zurich at 7:45am from US, but can't check in to housing in Colmar until 5pm. We have a day use hotel booked for a nap/shower before the train transfer. But you're probably right that it's not such a big discount, maybe just waiting to buy the regular ticket when we're ready to head that direction whatever time it might be. Maybe lunch in Basel since we have to transfer to the tram anyways.

There is no need whatsoever to buy this ticket in advance. This is trivial mass transit.

So yes, buy the saver ticket for Zurich Basel now, and then later buy the ticket for Basel - Colmar, which you actually should be able to do beforehand at the station in Basel as well, if needed.
