Train trip/ Swiss Travel Pass Questions please

Our visit to Switzerland is still a month away, but I am trying to learn more about our daily train travel as we work through our itinerary there so we can have some level of comfort when we arrive. Here are two questions I hope someone can help with.
1- We will be staying in 5 different places during our stay. I'm trying to understand the SBB app. Am I reading this correctly? When I enter in SBB our move from Zermatt to Wengen it looks like we take 5 different trains (Zermatt to Visp to Speiz to Interlockin to Lauterbrunnen, to Wengen). Does that look correct? Just want to make sure I am understanding what the app is telling me.

2- We will be there with a 15 Day Swiss Travel Pass. I have looked at the map on the site of where that pass is valid but it is very confusing, for example trying to find out what parts of our intinerary are covered by the pass, what parts we get a discount, and what parts are not covered at all. When going, for example, Zermatt to Wengen I think most of that trip is covered by the STP, but perhaps not the final move from Lauterbrunnen to Wengen? So my question is this.... when I get ready to take a train somewhere how can I tell before being approached for my ticket on board which parts of my journey I need to pay extra for? If it's covered by my STP I justs show the STP, but if it's half price or not covered how will I know to have paid for those portions of my trip? (Hoping that makes sense) Thanks!

  1. That is correct.
  2. Lauterbrunnen to Wengen is covered by STP. Anything above Wengen is not. If you are approached and they say something is not covered then you pay on board. I have used the Swiss Travel Pass on 4 different trips all over Switzerland. The Lauterbrunnen to Wengen (the train terminates higher up at Kleine Scheidig) leg is the only one where a conductor who checked my pass verbally confirmed that I was only going to Wengen. Other railways will have a separate ticket booth and personnel checking passes or tickets with a turnstile you have to go through.

Yes, that is correct. I just did this last month except I went from Zermatt to Murren. Wengen will be easier as you just have the train up from Lauterbrunnen. And don’t worry about the short transfer time in Lauterbrunnen. You will step out of the train and walk a few steps to the waiting train to take you up to Wengen.

I also had the 15-day STP and your full journey up to Wengen is covered. It’s when you move above Wengen and Murren that the 100% coverage ends and discounts apply.

  1. You have the correct route and required changes, but not the spelling of Interlaken. And you want the Interlaken Ost station. When you change to the train going to Lauterbrunnen, take not of the platform designation, A or B. They split the train on the way and hale (I believe the front half) goes to Lauterbrunnen, and the other half to Griindelwald. So be sure to board the train in the correct section.

  2. The Swiss Travel Pass fully covers all train rides that end in villages where people live. That includes Wengen. But above Wengen, it is considered a recreational lift, and The Swiss Pass gives only a discount, not full coverage. So if you are going UP from Wengen to Kleine Scheidegg, you need a ticket. The same is tru of the cablecar up to Männlichen from Wengen, and other cablecars in the area. Show your pass when you buy your ticket and they will charge you correctly.

Note there are a few exceptions to the “recreational lifts and trains” rule. The full Rigi loop from Luzern to the top of Rigi and back to Luzern by boat, cogwheel train, cable car and another boat is fully covered on the Swiss Travel Pass. It makes for a nice daytrip and I highly recommend it.

Thanks folks! Much apprecaited.

As for the map I have, it is the one on the STP site - https://www.swiss-pass.ch/wp-content/uploads/pdf/swiss-travel-system-map.pdf
and it shows some dotted lines at Wengen that the map one of you linked shows as solid lines.

In any case if the STP works to any village where people live and I only have to worry about coverage for the recreational lifts, gondolas, etc..... then that answer so many of my questions!

Thanks so very much! Safe travels!
