Hi! My family of 5 (Hubby, myself and our 3 adult kids) are traveling to Italy in December during Christmas and will be flying from Rome to Geneva then taking the train to Zermatt for skiing at Gornergrat. We’ll be staying in Zermatt for 3 nights then trying to decide between the BE or GE to either Tirano or St. Moritz depending on the train. We’re then trying to decide on taking a connecting train to Florence or if we should rent a car and drive where we’ll have 7 more days in Florence and Rome before flying home out of Rome. Looking for suggestions on if it’s better to purchase a Eurail pass during our vacation vs. purchasing individual tickets also. Thank you for any advice!
In order to get from Zermatt to a point to get the Bernina Express, You are likely going to need to take the Glacier Express, either to Chur or St Moritz. I would take the Glacier Express to St Moritz, then. Regional train to Tirano, as the scenery is the same, they are direct, and no need for the reservation fees.
You could buy Saver Day Passes to cover Geneva to Zermatt and Zermatt to St Moritz. Then you would only need the seat reservations fees for the Glacier Express.
You find it easier to take train from Rome to Milan, then Milan to Visp to get to Zermatt. Probably similar travel times without the hassle of airline travel.
