I am trying to determine the best train route from Zermatt to Salzburg. Should I take the Glacier Express? If so, from what point to what point? It looks like I can travel from Zermatt to Visp and then Zurich and on to Salzburg, but would I be missing out on significant scenery? If I take the Glacier Express - how far should I go to maximize scenery, but not over-do it, so I can get on to Salzburg? Is doing this in one long day do-able?

If you just plug it into the search engine at www.sbb.ch/en, you will see your options. If you do take the Glacier Express, you would get off at Chur then trains to Sargans where you will pick up the regular Railjet train to Salzburg.
On the SBB search engine, look for the train marked GEX. You may have to force the results by specifying "via" Disentis/Muster. Otherwise it will show the fastest way via Bern and Zurich.
Not sure if it can be done in one day. Take the earliest GEX in the morning and it should get you there.
Edit-Yes, leave at 8:52 and be in Salzburg by 8:03 pm.
