Hello. My husband and I are in the midst of an amazing trip through Switzerland, much thanks to the Rick Steve’s Switzerland book. We head to St Moritz tomorrow via the Glacier Express. We spend 2 nights there and will then take trains to Florence on October 8th (Bernina Express to Tirano, then to Milan (Trenord) and to Florence (Trenitalia). I am now looking at the weather forecast and it is looking like a very rainy day. (as in 1-2” with flooding potential). My concern is finding last minute alternate transportation at any point should our train(s) be delayed or cancelled due to weather. Any recommendations on what we can or should do if this occurs? I just want to have a back up plan in place should this happen. Thanks so much!
The alternative route from St Moritz would be the Postbus to Chiavenna, Italy, connecting to a train to Colico, then the train to Milan.
Taking the postbus to Chiavenna puts you on the same railway through Varenna. And that is where the line was interrupted last time floods closed down the line. So that is not a real option.
But do not suppose that heave rains mean floods. It is rare for heavy weather to cause disruptions. Don't worry ahead of time. Things will probably be fine.
I guess it all depends on where the flooding takes place. You take a ferry from Colico to Como, then a train to Milan. It is an impossible task to plan for every possible disruption. What if a derailment closes the rail line between Milan and Florence?
We have never been to Europe before, so I wanted to know if there were any backup plans I should consider ahead of a potential issue. At this point I will take the advice of “Do not Worry…” Good advice. We also are traveling during the day and should be able to get some help at TI’s at stations along the way if needed. Thank you for responding!
