Train to Murren?

We want to travel from Zermatt to Murren by train. I see there is a train station in Murren but I can’t find a train that goes there.

You would take the train from Zermatt to Lauterbrunnen. From there you have a couple options:

  1. From Lauterbrunnen, you can take the cableway to Grütschalp. Then change to the narrow gauge train to Mürren BLM, the train station in the north of the village.
  2. Take the bus from Lauterbrunnen to Stechelberg. Then take the cableway up to Mürren, with a change in Gimmelwald. The cable car station is in the south of the village.

I believe that you can buy a ticket that covers you all the way to Mürren by either route, including the gondolas, bus and private rail lines.

For trains within Switzerland I like to use the Swiss railways site.

https://www.sbb.ch/en/home.html

When you get on the train at Interlaken ost be sure to check the car you get on goes to Lauterbrunnen. I have read here in the forums that the train splits up. If you have a choice of routes go via Grutschalp. The short ride to Murren has great views.

Edit. Please note the site I linked has pricing that assumes you have a half fare card. So double the price shown as appropriate.

Mary,

for an easy and comprehensive description of transportation in the Berner Oberland I can highly recommend the 2 page spread map and information in the Rick Steves Switzerland guidebook.

Simply, between the trains there is a cable car/gondola.

Where are you looking for the train?

The journey is not difficult but it is a bit complicated.

Can I assume that you will have used a train to get to Zermatt? Where from, for reference?

If I knew where you were arriving from I could say if you will go over any familiar track and territory...

First you take the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn train from Zermatt to Visp. For the fastest train get a train at Visp to Spiez. It goes through a long tunnel under the Alps for much of its journey. For a slower much more beautiful journey change trains at Visp for a 7 minute journey just down the valley to Brig (the end of the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn line) and change at Brig for the train via Goppenstein or Kandersteg which takes you up and over the mountains with only a short tunnel, on the old line marketed as the Lötschberger because of the name of the line and tunnel. If you look up most trains from Brig to Spiez they will default to same train under the mountains as you would have taken from Visp (in fact most stop there). All what floats your boat, speed or view.

Once you get to Spiez change trains for one to Interlaken Ost. Don't jump off at the first Interlaken stop, Interlaken West, unless you want to shop at the MMMigros supermarket complex next to the station or want to go to the model railway or eat at McDonalds. Stay on until the last stop, Interlaken Ost.

Then at Interlaken Ost down into the tunnel and walk over to the BOB train heading to Lauterbrunnen. Careful, only get in the part of the train marked for Lauterbrunnen, the other half goes to Grindelwald and you can't walk between the two halves.

At Lauterbrunnen (last stop) either walk across the road or take the tunnel to the cable car/gondola (over the route previously used by a funicular railway) to Grütschalp where the crowd all walks up a few feet to the little train which takes you along the cliff to the Mürren station.

easy, huh? A lot easier than it sounds - Swiss transportation is all timed and organized to make such things possible...

Thank you to all of you for your very helpful replies. I will get on the rail site and follow your advice for finding our way to Murren!
I haven’t yet looked into if a Swiss pass pays off for our train travel from Geneva to Zurich and then to Murren and finally to Paris pays or I just buy individual tickets for each leg.

Do you mean Geneva to Zermatt, or is there a visit to Zürich there too? Geneva > Zürich > Zermatt > Mürren > Paris?

The trip to Paris is fastest via Basel at the moment....

Oh I mean from Geneva to Zermatt , Zermatt to Murren and then Murren to Paris. I’m not sure we could go to Paris on a Swiss pass, or that the price of a pass is less than each leg separately.

A Swiss Pass will not take you all the way to Paris, it it will take you to Basel or other city where you meet the TGV to Paris. You can buy discounted tickets for the international journey from Basel to Paris on SBB.ch, and you will get a nice discount if you do so 2-3 months in advance. At least it worked that way pre-covid.

Thank you for this information. I think we would be better off to fly home out of Geneva rather than Paris!
