Train tickets from Zurich to Murren

We are arriving in Zurich from Paris on Swiss Air and want to catch the train to Murren. I worry about buying the train tickets ahead of time because I don't know how long it will take to clear customs and get to the train, which I believe is in the airport. Can anyone provide any information about how long we should allow or if we should just wait to buy the train tickets when we arrive. Thank you.

You don’t need to buy tickets in advance. You could buy your train pass in advance, especially if you plan on buying a Swiss Travel Pass. There is a sale going on until 5/15.

Once you have your pass, you just get on the next train that is going where you want to go. No reservations needed. Use the SBB app to figure out the trains to take.

Normal tickets are not tied to a specific train. In fact, in Switzerland you cannot even buy "train" tickets. A ticket ZRH - Mürren is good for any train (and bus and cable car) on the route on the day you bought it for.

Note that flying Paris - Zurich and then taking the train to Mürren is time wise not very efficient.

It will take at least 8 hours to go from your lodging in Paris to Muerren if you fly to Zurich. It will take 7 to 7 1/2 hours if you take as TGV to Basel. If the airline ticket is bought, so be it, It is not that big a time difference, except the extra hassle of dealing with airports and security. Clearing customs in Zurich is just walking out the "Nothing to Declare" door. No passport check, as both France and Switzerland are in the Schengen Zone.

Since you mentioned that you're arriving on Swiss, I assume this segment of the trip starts in Paris and you are planning to go from Paris to Mürren by flying to Zürich?

If so, cancel the plane tickets, go to www.sbb.ch and buy a train ticket from Paris to Mürren. Easier, faster, cheaper, more comfortable. And no need to worry about how much time you need for connections.

If possible, I would also suggest travel by train rather than air on that route. For example, there's a TGV departure from Paris Est at 07:58, arriving Lauterbrunnen at 14:25 (time 6H:27M, 3 changes). From there it's only a few minutes to Mürren.

If you've already bought the air tickets, I suppose you'll have to go with that. As a previous reply indicated, you won't need to be concerned with Customs. There are rail ticket offices right in the airport as well as a rail station. Just buy your tickets for the next departure to Mürren. I didn't research the route, but you will have a couple of changes, one at Interlaken Ost and one at Lauterbrunnen. Be sure to disembark at Interlaken Ost and not Interlaken West.

When you buy your ticket to Mürren, you'll need to specify which route you'll be taking from Lauterbrunnen - the BLM route or the Schilthornbahn route. I'd probably use the BLM route as the cable car is right across form the Lauterbrunnen rail station. Just walk across the street, board the cable car for the short ride up the hill, and then transfer to the small BLM mountain railway, which will be waiting.
