Train Tickets from Luzern to Milano Centrale

Last night, I was trying to buy the train tickets on line from Luzern to Milano Centrale through the website www.sbb.ch/en for April 6 but having trouble with it. I was able to pick out the tickets with the time I wanted but there wasn't any option for me to check out and got the message that I need to call.

So I looked up the options through www. thetrainline.com but I couldn't find any trains that leave before noon on Monday, April 6. I want to leave Luzern in the morning so I can get to Venice before it gets dark (before 4 or 5 p.m.)

I would appreciate some help how to book the tickets on line. Any ideas why it wouldn't let me to purchase those tickets? I could possibly buy them at the train station but my concern is that I can't able to get the one with timeline I want to go.

Thank you,
Cathy

Trainline doesn’t sell tickets for Swiss trains, and the trains that you are looking at have a short section on regional trains from Luzern to Arth-Goldau. You should be able to buy the cross-border train (Arth-Goldau to Milan) on Trainline if you want; then buy the connection from Luzern to Arth-Goldau later (SBB.ch son’s well that alone until 30 days ahead, or you could buy it at the station anytime before departure).

But went through the purchase option for the 11:18 departure from Luzern and got all the way to where I fill in my lame and address, etc. I didn’t try to go past that is the next step would be entering my credit card details. I did get error messages twice during the process. saying that SBB.ch was “offline” and I should try again later. When that happens, just hit the “back” button to the previous page, and then try the “next” button again. That works for me.

So I suggest you keep trying. It may help to register on SBB.ch and log in (although I was not logged in to my account when I did the test run, I used the “guest” purchase route.)

You can get tickets from www.trenitalia.com, but only for the direct train to Milan at 12:18. However, it shows a connecting Frecciarosso to Venezia S. Lucia arriving at 7:12 pm. Sunset in Venice will be at 7:45 pm on April 6. Ticket cost if you buy a nonrefundable ticket now is 68.90 EUR.

You could get an earlier ticket from Trenitalia by buying the ticket from Arth-Goldau. There is a train there at 10:05 that will get you to Venice by 3:42 pm and cost is 64 EUR. Trenitalia can only sell tickets for trains from outside the country that go directly into Italy. There is only 1 direct train a day from Luzern. All the other trains from Luzern require a connection at Arth-Goldau, thus Trenitalia can't sell them, but it can sell tickets for the trains from Arth-Goldau. So just buy a ticket for the local train from Luzern to Arth-Goldau that arrives in time to make the connection. That is a 13 CHF ticket, and there is a train from Luzern at 9:18 that gets to Arth-Goldau at 9:51, a comfortable connecting time, but there are lots of earlier trains as well.

Thank you Lola and Sam for quick responses.
Yes, I did create the account last night and did go through that step and was able to pick out three tickets that I wanted but there wasn't a "next button" to continue. I will try again this evening.

We did this in reverse from Milan to Luzern with a change at Arth-Goldau. We booked in advance for the Milan to Arth-Goldau leg to get the good early discounts then just bought a ticket from a machine at Arth-Goldau station to Luzern. Easy. Arth-Goldau station is small so you shouldn’t get lost.

As the train to Milan will probably have come from Zurich or Germany you should book to make sure you can get onto it in Arth-Goldmau and make sure that includes seat reservation.

Hey hey cathy
sent you a private message, check inbox upper right hand area.
you and family may want to buy snacks/drinks/lunch in Luzern before hopping on train, have a picnic. We booked a 4 seater train, check individual carriage when picking seats when you book. Pack light, can always rinse in sink, hang to dry. Easier than lugging heavy bags, you’re in charge of own bags, you won’t regret it. you’ll see others with overloaded bags.
after all this planning and research, you’ll be thinking where to next on flight home😳

Sorry It may be a stupid question but I never booked these tickets before..
What are the differences between Smart (cheapest), Smart 2 ( in the middle), and Adult/Standard (more expensive). What should I choose?

Thanks,

Smart is lowest price and completely nonrefundable, Smart 2 more expensive and available up to 7 days before departure but still nonrefundable and Standard is a full price completely flexible ticket. If you are sure about your schedule, I'd go with the cheapest. Looks like the 10:05 is direct to Venice.

Thanks so much Sam. Should I buy the tickets from Luzern to Arth-Goldau at the train station? Would it possible the tickets be sold out that day?

Actually, it wouldn't let me purchase the tickets from Luzern to Arth-Goldau now for April 6. I think it is too early to buy them ( the message said "your selected date of travel is not within the advanced booking period") so I am guessing I will have to buy them at the station then.

You can buy them at Luzern station on the day of travel (or on a previous day, postdated). As with all Swiss trains, full fare tickets are not train specific, they cannot "sell out".

Swiss trains never "sell out". They could be crowded and you would not find a seat, but trains in Switzerland are so frequent, that would only happen at rush hour in a big city, or a major sporting event. You can buy "seat reservations" for 5 CHF, but nobody ever does because experience has shown that they are totally unnecessary.

07-04-2020 means April 7. Did you buy non-refundable tickets from Trenitalia?
