Train ride advice-Golden Pass or Glacier Express

Our RS tour ends in Bern at the end of June. Before we book the airfare, we’re considering 3 additional nights to experience the Golden Pass or Glacier Express. We would need to end up in Zurich to fly home. We’re early 70’s, in good health and want relaxing beautiful experiences. Appreciate any advice.

I assume this is the Best of Switzerland Tour.

Easiest is to take the train to Interlaken Ost, then the Luzern-Interlaken Express to Luzern. That is part of the Golden Pass route. But you started in Luzern already. You could some other things in Luzern, like visit Mt Pilatus, or Stanserhorn, or Rigi Kulm. Perhaps stay in one of the villages on the lake, like Vitznau or Weggis.

You could backtrack to Montreux and take the full Golden Pass to Luzern.

The Glacier Express is problematic as these days, tour companies suck up all of the seat reservations as soon as they become available. So if you get the reservations, you could do that. Then you would need to take a train to Zermatt, spend a night, then the Glacier Express to St Moritz, spend a night, then train to Zurich for the flight home the next day. Time enough for an afternoon and evening in Zurich.

Agree with the comments about the Glacier Express and the tour companies getting early access to the seat reservations. As expensive as Switzerland can be this is a real poke in the eye to those of us that book on our own. I’ve been playing with the system the last few nights when seats go open and it’s like Ticketmaster. Poof. Especially Excellence Class if you want that. Not me.
