train from Switzerland to Italy

My wife and I will fly into Switzerland, then a few days later take a train to Florence, Italy. Exploring rail options online seems to flood me with too much information. There are lots of options! We'll depart from either Zurich or Lucerne and would like to arrive in Florence late afternoon or early evening. We don't care about luxury in our travel but do hope to see the beauty of the Alps.

Suggestions?

Hi mthayes. Obvious route is with one connection in Milan. The route thru Switzerland is scenic. Look at bahn.de for schedules. You can wait and buy tix when there for full price, or buy in advance using Swiss and Italian rail sites. When looking on Italian rail site (trenitalia.com) for the Milan to Florence leg, use Italian station names Milano Centrale and Firenze SMN. Enjoy your trip!

And the Italian word for Zurich is Zurigo, when using the Trenitalia website. Careful though. Make sure you can get print-at-home tickets or you may have to pick them up at an Italian train station, which is tough to do when you are in Switzerland.

Thanks to both Bob and Sam. I'm thoroughly enjoying the planning for this trip but I admit to needing a bit of help here and there. Thanks again!
