Train from Speiz to Rome - SBB or Trenitalia?

Who should I be purchasing train tickets from for a trip from Speiz to Rome? Should I just do this in the train station or plan ahead? I know folks saying buying train tickets in Switzerland ahead of time isn't something that needs to be done - but what about trains going to Italy?

Check the pricing from both websites, you can do either. The only advantage you really have in purchasing ahead of time is the possibility that you'll get a cheaper price for the advance ticket options. To figure out if there is enough of a price difference you can price it out for your actual date vs. if you were going today or tomorrow and see. We're taking a train from Munich to Switzerland this summer and normally I never buy train tickets ahead but I did notice there is a pretty significant cost savings to doing that route ahead of time so I may buy in advance. TBD.

You can save a lot on that journey buying ahead. The route you want is the one with a single change in Milan, taking 6 hours total. You can buy on either SBB.ch or Trenitalia, but if you have a Swiss Pass of some type it might be easier to claim the discount on SBB.

An example of the savings: buying today for 13 July, the full price is 172€ (or 165 CHF) for full fare; reduced price €118 (125 CHF).
