Train from Interlaken to Brig / Glacier Express

Hi! We’ll be spending a few days in Wengen over the new years holiday, and looking to take the Glacier Express from Brig to Chur. I don't think it’d be possible to get all the way from Wengen to Brig by train in enough time for a 930 or 1030am Glacier Express departure…was wondering if we spent the night in Interlaken if we could make it to Brig in time?

It is perfectly doable to travel from Wengen to Brig in time for the Glacier Express. Have a look at www.sbb.ch for schedules.

In this case you would need a ticket from Wengen to Chur, via Brig and a reservation for the Glacier Express.

I suggest that you download the SBB app for train info. You will need it while in Switzerland. There is a 7:13 train from Wengen that arrives in Brig at 9:11. The Glacier Express leaves at 9:18. Or an 8:12 that arrives at 10:11. The GE leaves at 10:18. Both have several connections, but should be easy. Those times are based on tomorrow’s date. In the app, you can plug in your dates.

The connection times may seem short but they are eminently doable. No dilly-dallying, but if you are ready to get off the train as soon as it stops, the 7-minute connections mentioned by Travel4Fun are sufficient.

Ah! Ok got it! I kept trying to plug in the locations to google maps and it would give me longer travel times based on trains and cable cars and things. But I see in the SBB app the train/connections you guys mention. Yay! We wanted to maximize our time in Wengen so this is great - thank you all!!!

Remember, the Glacier Express departs from outside of Brig station in the street. So you will arrive at Brig inside the station on the mainline platforms and have to walk outside to the Glacier Express platform in front of the station. Here is a picture.

another alternative is to catch a previous train from Interlaken / Spiez to Brig and walk around the corner to the Migros supermarket's café (even has some outdoor seating) for a coffee and a pastry, and then wander over to the Glacier Express train when it comes in.

We recently did the glacier express from Brig to St. Moritz. We were in Wengen but took a late afternoon train to Brig to spend the night before catching the Glacier express the next day. We found Brig to have a charming old town and went to a restaurant that appeared to be filled with non english speakers for a very nice dinner. We wanted to not stress over catching our GE express train on time. The SBB app is awesome and the Swiss definitely have taken public transportation to a high level. We did experience a few delays on some trains so getting to Brig the night before was easy and the old town was a very nice surprise (contrary to Rick’s description).
