Train from Chamonix to Luzern on Golden Pass route

On June 16, my wife and I want to travel by train from Chamonix, France, to Montreux, Switzerland, and then immediately take the Golden Pass train toward Luzern via Interlaken. I hope you can help me with my questions, and thank you. Bob
1. Is there a train from Chamonix to Montreux? Earliest train in the day leaving Chamonix?
2. Does that trip require a change of trains anywhere between Chamonix and the Martigny area?
3. Is there a change of trains at or near Martigny?
4. Is there a change of trains between Martigny and the Montreux station (from where we plan to board the Golden Pass to Luzern)?
5. We may stay overnight on the 16th at a small town between Montreux and Luzern. Since I have been told we must change trains in Zweisimmen, I thought that would be a good town to overnight in, since we have to get off the train anyway, and it would be a good way to break up the trip and see another small town. What kind of a place is Zweisimmen? Pretty? Hiking trails? Authentic?

You can use sbb.ch to see the schedule. It looks like the earliest train departs Chamonix Mont Bland at 7:54 am and arrives in Montreux at 10:19. You change trains at Vallorcine ( the Swiss border) and at Martigny.

Thanks Lola. I did go to the sbb.ch site and put in 2nd class tickets. I inserted route and date on step one, and passengers' ages and number in step 2. But at step 3 a message says, "Bookings are not possible for your journey and the possible reasons why are: train canceled, train fully booked, desired class is fully booked, desired class is not available on one or more fare stages. You have these options: Choose another connection, try to reserve the journey in the available class"
The screen does not allow me to get to "special offers", "reservations", and "purchase" as the three final steps. There is a place to put in a user name and password, but it does not say I must do this.
Are the user name and password required to make the reservation?
By the way, we will most likely have Half Fare passes.
Is there a discount for buying the actual train tickets early (and how early), and is there a discount for buying them on the website verses buying them in person in Switzerland, (traveling in June)?
I do have the full schedule from Chamonix to Zweisimmen printed out and it is just as you said.
Another question: The next day we will be continuing the journey from Zweisimmen to Luzern; are tickets cheaper by purchasing the entire journey from Chamonix to Luzern at the same time, and can you actually do that when you are stopping for an overnight enroute in Zweisimmen?
Additionally, if anyone knows something of what the village of Zweisimmen is like, I would appreciate your thoughts on that.

If you put in your actual date in June it wil show the schedule but not prices because thecSwiss train site only sells tickets 30 days out. And there is really no reason to buy in advance as there are no discounts for advance purchase, apart from some city pairs that go on sale 30 days in advance. I doubt these apply to the Chamonix. Trains.

If you want to ride the actual Golden Pass train with special cars you can get tickets and reserved seats on the Golden Pass website.

http://www.goldenpass.ch/en/goldenpass/offer/view?id=14

But I recall reading something about the special panoramic cars being taken out of service for a bit for renovation. I am not sure if that applies to your timeframe but you should cjheck.

I'm looking into Chamonix-Montreux as well and believe the train is aka the Mont Blanc Express, that it's got great views and well worth it, and that only the full Swiss Travel Pass provides full passage, i.e. the Swiss Half-Pass doesn't provide a discount because the train starts in France, not Switz.

@Dove traveller.
What is and isn't covered by the Swiss Pass and Swiss Half Fare Card is shown on the official map here: https://www.sbb.ch/content/dam/sbb/de/infotexte/uebersichtskarte-sts.pdf
Generally they both have the same coverage, Swiss rail lines (that means owned by a Swiss railway company) and Swiss bus routes (run by Swiss companies).

"doesn't provide a discount because the train starts in France, not Switz." - It doesn't matter where the train starts from, it is covered once it is running on Swiss tracks. For example a French TGV Paris-Basel-Zürich is covered by Swiss passes from Basel to Zürich.

The rail line from Chamonix to Martigny is an exception. The Swiss Half Fare Card is valid only from the border onwards (as expected).
The Swiss Pass additionally covers the whole route from Chamonix to Martigny, not just from the border.

Thanks Chris, that's what I was saying and that's the section of the trip I'm doing on the full STP, from Chamonix-Vevey.

Would you advise my booking a reservation on this route in mid-June, and/or a seat reservation (is that even possible)? I'll likely leave Chamonix in the morning, but then again I might want to linger in Chamomix if the weather is nice. Appreciate any thoughts you or others have on that.

@Dove traveller, maybe I was being pedantic. The Swiss Half Price Card is valid on the part of that route in Switzerland. And it doesn't matter where the train starts (or ends), it is where it is that defines Pass validity.
