Train from Chamonix to Luzern

I apologize for being lazy and not looking this up myself, but I figure one of the train experts might just know this off the top of their head.

On Sept. 25, a Friday, I need to get from Chamonix to Luzern. I already have a Swiss Saver Day Pass for that day. So, I think I just need a ticket from Chamonix to Vallorcine. Do I have that right?

Do I need to buy the Chamonix to Vallorcine ticket ahead of time? If so, buy that on SNCF?

Or should I buy a ticket from Chamonix to Luzern and somewhere enter that I have the Saver Day Pass? If so, buy that on SBB? Do that now or can I wait?

Thank you!!

Chamomix to Vallorcine is a TER, so always the same price., so you can buy when you are in Chamonix.

If you have a Mont Blanc pass, that should cover the train from Chamonix to Vallorcine.

Especially on a Friday in September, I doubt you will need to make a reservation. Just
stop at the ticket window in the train station and get a ticket before you board the train.

Not only do you not need a reservation, you couldn't even get one if you wanted to. The trains on the obvious route (via Martigny and Lausanne) all are non-reservable.

With a Saver Day Pass you could decide to make some scenic detours if you wanted, like going via Andermatt...

Thank you all! I appreciate it! One less thing to worry about.

I’ll only be in Chamonix for 2 nights as part of the Rick Steves my way alps tour. So, it probably won’t be worth getting a pass.

Thanks for mentioning the route via Andermatt. I will write myself a note to take a look at that option.

Carrie, check if you will get a guest card with your lodging in Chamonix. It allows free travel to Vallorcine. Are you going to visit Emosson dam along the way?

Dave A, thanks for mentioning the guest card. I will definitely look into that. And if the hotel doesn’t offer it, it looks like I can purchase one for 4 euros from the tourist office. That sounds cheaper than the train ticket would be.

I am not sure about the Emosson dam. I’ll have my luggage with me, so my initial thought is probably not. I’ll look into it though. I have another trip in 2 weeks, so I haven’t spent too much time planning for the my way tour yet.
