Train from Bern to Wengen

Good Evening

As part of planning for a future trip I am looking at catching a train from Bern to Wengen. The website shows a 7 minute connection in Interlaken and 5 minute connection in Lauterbrunnen.

We are in our sixties and reasonably fit but will have luggage (one case each) and I am wondering whether it is feasible to easily make these connections? Alternatively, are the tickets for a specific train or could we simply catch the next train (30 minutes later) if required?

Thanks for your help.

I would expect no difficulties. Swiss trains are extremely reliable, and neither Interlaken Ost nor Lauterbrunnen is a large station.

Just make sure you get off at Interlaken Ost, not Interlaken West.

The trains from Interlaken to Lauterbrunnen, and Lauterbrunnen to Wengen, are regional services, so no reservations, and yes you can just hop on the next train. Just check when you buy your ticket to be certain.

Just did this and we are 69 and 70…….easy train rides…….just make certain as a prior reader said that you know the difference between Interlaken OST and Interlaken West…….we didn’t and made that mistake initially…….I also found that if I would get ready and stand at the door of the train as it approached the stop that I was never caught off-guard. That helped me a lot! Lauterbrunnen is an easy quiet stop…….Interlaken is bigger and busier but looking over your stops before you go helps!

Excellent advice from Jane. We made similar connections at similar ages and had no problems. The Swiss rail system is superb and it seems that the arrival/departure times are designed to make connections workable. Lauterbrunnen is so small you can probably make it in 2 minutes. Bon Voyage!

I agree with the folks above. I never had a problem and have done it many times. I will say that at the Interlaken Ost station, the train to Lauterbrunnen is on the tracks very close to the station (something like track 1A or 2A). Make sure it says "Lauterbrunnen" on the side of the train car, as some of the cars later split off to go to Grindelwald.
