Trying to travel by train from Paris to Zermatt.
The SBB site offers several routes with other cities - noted as “direction ————“ (other cities along the way)
Any help to offer with the best or simplest choice? I’ve no experience or idea.
That AND from where does the train depart in Paris? I have to assume the SBB routes go into and depart from Paris.
The "direction" is there to help you find your train. On the departure boards at stations not always all the stops of a train are mentioned (because there is not enough space), but the final destination is always shown. So if for example SBB says "10:22 direction Zürich" that is how you find your train: Look for a train with destination Zürich on the departure board that leaves at 10:22.
This does not mean that you stay till that city on the train. The on line time table does show where you get off, and what train you get on. Just click on a timetable line and you will see the details.
Note that these are not SBB routes. The trains in France are operated by SNCF, but SBB can sell you tickets for those trains, which is why they are shown, and why you can book them on www.sbb.ch
THANK YOU!
This makes absolute sense.
You sound like a train newbie, the Man in Seat 61 can help you with tons of info
Very new and I don’t understand the seat 61 reference.
I did spend a lot of time on the SBB site today. Am leaning.
Am learning
here is the link to the Man in Seat 61 webpages on Swiss trains. A good read through will help with understanding.

Mark - the man whose site it is is has loads and loads of knowledge and experience and writes these pages for railways all over the world.
Based in England, and from a good railroading background he knows of what he speaks.
The webpage name is from his favourite seat on the older Eurostar trains from England to France and Belgium. I like 61 too, at least a cote a cote (2 seats facing each other over a small table in Standard Premier).
Thank you, Phred and Nigel. Clearly did NOT get that it was a reference.
That SBB site definitely requires acclimating.
I explored our route - Paris to Zermatt, Chur to Luzern, and then Luzern to Zurich. Part of my search was doing the math on fares to weigh against the Swiss 1/2 Fare Pass. With a hopeful lift experience in Zermatt or Chur - maybe Luzern? and exploring a boat ride on Lake Luzern I’m thinking a yes to the pass. We’ll see.
I will certainly note that while navigating new sites like SBB coulled with Rick Steves hard copy books, it is great to be able to jot wonders to ask on this site. Really appreciate those of you with experience take your time to assist.
do note that the default price on the SBB sites assumes that you have a 1/2 price discount. The sites are written for the Swiss residents who use the trains all the time - many don't own cars or use them more rarely - and most of them have a GA card so get half off - so that's why the default is 1/2 price. You can switch that off, but don't get confused in your calculations between full price and half.
I'm seeing you really getting on the learning curve here.
