Train booking with swiss half fare card

Hi

We r travelling from Montreux to Interlaken on 19th june and will be buying swiss half fare card.

Need help
1. Should we pre book ticket for Montreux to Interlaken R can we buy ticket on the day of travel.

  1. Tried booking ticket in raileurope.com, here they dont provide field to mention we have half fare card. If it doesnt show the option to declare half fare card, then i have to pay full price of the ticket. Bit confused here.

How to book train ticket online using half fare card and get discounts on the train tickets.

There's no need to buy tickets in advance. They're easy to get in any train station at both machines and staffed ticket windows. The web site that would process most tickets with a Swiss Half Fare Card is www.sbb.ch. However, if you want to reserve a seat in a panorama car for the portion of the trip from Montreux to Zweisimmen, then see http://www.mob.ch/en/reservation-procedure.

You don't pre-book tickets on Swiss trains, it doesn't work that way. It is a "turn-up-and-go" service.
You just go to the station and buy a ticket, either from the ticket machine (faster) or the manned ticket counter. There are two options on the ticket machine "Full fare" and "½ fare/child", you want the latter. If it is a manned counter, tell him/her you have a ½ fare card.
The ticket will be valid for any train that day. Montreux to Interlaken Ost will cost CHF 27.00 with a ½ fare card.

Times and fares from the SBB website: https://www.sbb.ch/en/ Using the actual train company website is always better than resellers in other countries.
Please try to spell place names correctly, it will save a lot of confusion.

And in case you didn't know, you will need to have your half fare cards (one for each traveler) ready to show the train conductor when he/she checks the tickets on the train.

Hi, jumping in on this thread -- can you purchase the half fare card at a ticket station (we're starting at the Zurich airport) or do you need to buy it online in advance of your trip? Thanks!

You can buy it at Zurich Airport train station. You don't even need to have a Half Fare Card to buy a ticket, since you can buy a ticket out of a vending machine and just click the button indicating you have the card and you get the Half Fare price. You just need to have it in your possession when you board the train. Show the card to the conductor when he asks to see your ticket so he knows you paid the right fare. Otherwise, there will be trouble (for you).

Booking on-line, you just check the box that you have the Half Fare card. Like I said, as long as you have it before you board the train, you're good. For the most part, train tickets do not need to be bought in advance, although there some train-specific Supersaver fares available within 30 days of the train's departure. There are no reservations needed except for certain tourist type excursion trains like the Glacier Express.

Lastly, do not deal with Rail Europe. In Switzerland, www.sbb.ch/en. They run the trains.

Sam, thanks for the info. We are planning to take a train from Zurich to Murren. Spending a week riding cable cars and a trip to Jungfrau, then train to Basel. Still doing the math but it seems like the half fare pass would save us some money. Appreciate the help! 🙂
