Top Three Areas to Visit

I have an apartment rented for the full month of September in the Berner Oberland area. But, due to some still-possible border restrictions, I may have to arrive in the country a couple weeks earlier than planned.

What other area(s) are your favorite to spend time - and what would you do/see? I probably should mention that I'm over 70 years old, so will most likely NOT be climbing mountains. :)

Thanks for your suggestions

do you want to stay in the BO or see more of the country? Rick has suggested itineraries for various lengths of trips in each of his guidebooks.

The BO is on the Golden Pass route so you could go either towards Luzern or Montreux. You could also take the Glacier Express (which isn't much of an express but is beloved). Or the Bernina Express.

No, I think I'd like to visit another area or two - but not so much traveling around. I like to get to a place and spend some days exploring the area.

I highly recommend Luzern. It is a beautiful city. Might even be close to the top of my favorite cities in Europe. You could do a boat trip on the lake, or do the boat trip to a cog wheel train that will take you to the top of the mountain (Rigi).

Basel is colorful and charming. It has an incredible Rathuis, there is river walk, or you can get a view of the river from behind the cathedral.

Bern on the Aare river has an medieval town center with a fascinating clock tower.

You could spend a day or more on the scenic trains. We stayed a night in Chur (cute little town) and then took the Bernina Express.

When I visited Switzerland, I created a sampler itinerary for myself: 4 nights in each of 3 of the language regions. Geneva, Luzern and Melide on Lake Lugano. Plus time around Zurich.

My favorite was Lake Lugano! My best remembered activity (besides hiking down Mt San Salvatore) was Ballenberg, the open air museum which we went to from Luzern.

Thank you for the suggestions. I think I can make quite a nice trip of these.
