Too hot to hike at the end of July? Thunderstorms during the day?

Hello everyone :)

(Sorry for my English)

Is it really too hot to HIKE the Haute-Route in Switzerland (from Verbier to Zermatt) and also hike a few days in the Berner Oberland at the end of july or is it doable as it's a dry heat and/or because we are hiking in higher elevations so it's a bit colder?

Are there thunderstorms everyday in these areas as is the case in the afternoon in summer in Colorado?

Thanks a lot :)

Well, we will know at the end of July...

But normal summer weather here means sunny mornings, and increased chance for showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon. And as soon as the sun sets it gets cool quite rapidly.

So you can expect shorts and t-shirt during the day and needing a windbreaker at night. And start out early, so you are at your next accommodation early afternoon.

In the Berner Oberland you'll likely be hiking at 1200 meters minimum. That elevation is about 8 degrees C less than at sea level. And it will get cooler as you go up. And you are also correct that the higher you go the less humid it is.

So it might be hot, but because it's mountains it should probably not be too bad. I wouldn't worry about it.

I have found the mountain sun to be very hot when I have been there in June and September. You definitely want to wear a hat.

Thanks a lot for your answers. It makes me feel better :)

Haute Route is about 2500-2900 meters so I guess it's less hot there.

Zermatt: Gornergrat, Rothorn et Oberrothorn. Hörnlihütte Hiking

Berner Oberland: Schilthorn-piz Gloria / Lauterbrunnen > Wengen > Mannlichen > detour Royal Walk > Kleine Scheidegg > Fallbodensee > Eigergletscher/Eiger Trail / Alpigen / Schynige Platte to First Cliff Walk / Kandersteg to see the Oeschinen lake / Ridge Augstmatthorn de Harder Klum

I hope it's going to be bearable ah ah! I hate the heat :)
