I will be spending 3 weeks in Italy before my husband flys to Europe to meet me on 5/22/16. On 5/28/16 we will need to be in Austria and will be spending a week in St. Johann im Pongau. It is located about 40km south of Salzburg. We need to decide where he should fly in to. We haven't been to Switzerland, so my thought is to fly from Milan to Zurich and meet him there. With 6 nights I was thinking we could spend at least 3 nights in the BO. It seems places in the BO could still be closed though. Is it a good time there, or should we concentrate on other parts of Switzerland?
Not everything will be "closed" in the BO because there are villages with actual residents who live there :-) If you've never been there you should go to see the dramatic scenery. It's a fantastic place like no other. You'll be amazed. And don't get sucked into staying in "Interlaken" which is NOT in the alps. Yes, you can do daytrips from there, but just choose the amazing alpine villages of Murren, Wengen, Lauterbrunnen, etc.
Thanks for your reply. I was thinking about staying in Murren or Lauterbrunnen. I know that not everything will be closed. I was just wondering what it would be like that time of year.
I've been there several times at the beginning of June and the wildflowers were blooming beautifully everywhere. I've also seen a foot of snow during that time period. Murren is never "packed" with tourists, which is a good thing. Enjoy the solitude and the incredibly clean and crisp mountain air. If you can book the Denise at the Chalet Fontana you'll have a wonderfully warm time with a super hostess full of information and genuine friendliness. She runs the Chalet as well as the attached private apartment and an additional apartment down the path a bit behind the Stager Stubli.
Although it was still fairly quiet in Muerren when we went in May 2014 the weather on May 22nd and May 23rd could not have been any better. It was short sleeves and sunlight all around!
And don't worry if the day starts like this - because it often ends up like this!
PS - make sure to take your rain gear to Salzburg though :-)
