Toll Roads in Switzerland - Toll Pass?

My wife and I are hiring a car in Munich and plan to travel throughout Switzerland. I have noticed by using Google Maps to estimate distances that virtually every road has a toll! Is there a way to reduce the cost by purchasing a toll pass ahead of time or obtaining a pass when we get the car in Germany?
Thanks, Phil

Switzerland doesn't have individual tolls that I am aware of. There's a vignette you have to buy and place on your windshield before using any of the highways. It's a flat charge of CHF 40 for a calendar year, assuming this website is current.

I assume you'll be driving back to Germany to drop off the car.

If you can manage to drive through without getting on a motorway, you don't need the vignette. It'll be a slow trip. If you use Viamichelin instead of Google Maps, you can set it to show routes that don't require a vignette.

You will need to buy a vignette at the border. You cannot pay the tolls at booths once in Switzerland...they don't exist. Cameras on the motorways see the toll stickers...cars without them will receive an automatic citation in the mail. Traveling by side road will eat up a huge amount of time...I recommend just buying the vignette. It's a negligible expense in relation to the time it will save you and the overall cost of your trip.

The above posters are mostly correct. All Swiss "toll" roads are paid through the annual purchase of a Vignette, which costs 40 CHF. The backing paper for the adhesive vingette contains instructions how and where to put it. You can get it pretty much at any gas station or post office and garages in Switzerland. Outside Switzerland I'd also check gas stations or kiosks near the border.

I've never heard of a camera system checking for the stickers in Switzerland. To the best of my knowledge this is something the Austrians do for their sticker. Still if you do get caught it's a 200 CHF fine.

If I were you I'd check with the rental company. They might already have cars that have been to Switzerland and still carry a valid sticker. Or they could get one for you.

If you're getting your car in Munich then it's likely you'll be entering Switzerland around lake constance. Which means you'll have to drive over some local roads before you get to the Swiss Autobahn. You're bound to find some gas station there that sells you one.

We stayed for 5 weeks in Valais and we were told that there were cameras on the motorway in that area...the people whose car we were using warned us about them. Maybe it was their way of making sure we didn't get a ticket in their car??!! :)

There are speed cameras all over, not just on the motorway.
But I don't think the cameras are good enough to spot if the car has an Autobahn Vignette on it or not.

The vignette costs CHF 40 per calendar year. There are no reductions. The only way to avoid the cost (which isn't that much) is if you are lucky enough to get a car that already has a 2018 vignette on the windscreen.

This is the official Swiss Government page on the vignette: https://www.ezv.admin.ch/ezv/en/home/information-individuals/documents-for-travellers-and-road-taxes/motorway-charge-sticker--vignette-.html
