To rent or not to rent in Engadine

Hi All,
I am spending two days in mid-Sept in the upper Engadine valley. Traveling solo, I will have light cabin luggage and will stay at a hotel for two nights. I plan to spend the two days hiking the region. I want to maximize time hiking and enjoying the landscape vs getting from point A to B. I have read in many places that we do NOT need to rent a car to get around the Engadine region and my hotel is providing a two day regional pass. However, are there downsides to having a car? Can a car save time? Example: as of now my hotel is two buses, or 1 train and 1 bus ride away from Pontresina station - are these types of commutes simplified with a car?

Thank you!

The downside of a car is cost of course, but also the fact that you won't be able to enjoy the scenery as much if you drive. Some roads are narrow and winding. Where is your hotel, by the way?

Another downside of a car is that you have to return to where you parked it after each hike. In Switzerland the hiking paths form a network, and a lot of the hikes are not circuits. So typically you would take public out to one spot, hike to another, and then return from there again by public transport .

Thanks all.
@balso - I have duplicate reservations simply cuz I can't figure out ease of access without a car. One is right by the Pontresina train station - that is easy access, but no view. The other is in the Maloja Pass near Silsersee..

Mandy,
We stayed in Pontresina 3 nights last year and traveled to trailheads by train and bus using the regional transportation passes given to us by our hotel. The passes are more valuable than having a car in the area, in my opinion. I'm not sure which hikes you have in mind for 2 days, but you would be able to access more trailheads than you have time.
Our hotel was close to the Surovos (stop and demand) station. That area of Pontresina is more picturesque than the main train station because it is at a higher elevation and depending on your hotel, you would be able to see the surrounding mountains.

I know you mentioned returning to Milan after being in Switzerland, so not sure about the convenience of train travel between those 2 areas.

I would much rather stay in Pontresina than by Maloja pass, view or no view. Pontresina is perfectly central for the Engadine highlights, whereas Maloja is at one end.
