Tickets missing from SCC account website and app & Zurich to Chur train construction

I hope someone can help. I bought a saver day pass in July for our family of four for a travel day in October. This was supposed to cover our trip from Zurich to Chur to Tirana via the Bernina express. I learned today that the route from Zurich to Chur will be having construction during our stay. In addition, the tickets are missing from my account on the SBB site and the app. I luckily printed the tickets and the confirmation.

1- Is there a way to contact them (SBB) from the United States? I only have a cell phone with no long distance plan.

2- Do we also need to buy some other pass or is that Saver day pass ticket enough to ride most trains that whole day? The Swiss Travel pass seems only for people riding 3+ days.

3- We may scrap the Bernina express even thought I have seats reserved due to fears of not getting to Chur. If so, can I use the day saver on a train from Zurich to Locarno (IR 46) and the take a train an hour later from Locarno to Milan on that same pass (RE 80)? We just learned about the Treno Gottardo and I see those individual routes on the SBB site but if I search as one trip they don’t show up without 3 stops.

4- If yes to 3, how do I reserve seats on the Trent Gottardo since I already bought the day pass?

5- Is it possible to hire a car to drive us from Zurich to Chur?

Help. I’m so stressed out and have spent so much time working on this trip.
Thanks! Megan

You can email at the contact center at the bottom of this page.

What is you travel day? There is always a work-around during construction.

  1. The Treno Gottardo is a regional train with no reserved seats. Open seating. I'd be shocked if you didn't have your choice of seats when you board.

Edit: I saw this in October:

Limited service Siebnen-Wangen - Reichenburg
Limited rail services on the Zürich HB - Sargans line between Siebnen-Wangen and Reichenburg.
This is due to engineering work.
The restriction lasts from 08.10.23, 23:10 until 23.10.23, 05:10.
Expect longer journey times, changed journey times, changed connecting services and cancellations.
The online timetable will be changed.
We recommend you to check your timetable online shortly before travelling.

By time you are ready to fly to Switzerland, everything will be settled and organized. It is Switzerl;and after all. Don't make too much about it.

There is no email address for SBB only the international phone number. That would make it so much easier if I could email.
That's weird about the reservations for Treno Gottardo because when I look at the schedule it says R "Place reservation possible". good to know it's not necessary.

Carrie from Chicago suggests this.

E-mail: backoffice@stc.ch

I do see this note about reservations for the Treno Gottardo:

For seat reservation for touristic trains such as the Bernina Express, Albula Express, Glacier Express or Voralpen Express and Treno Gottardo etc. please contact a public transport point of sale.

The train goes every 2 hours, 5 times a day. I seriously doubt you need a reservation, especially in October.

I was unable to find a way to make reservations for the Treno Gottardo for our journey in September. When we took it last September, with first class tix, I could not make reservations. But when we boarded and found seats, two Swiss women told us we were in heir reserved seats. The car was otherwise empty, so we moved, and enjoyed conversation with them the whole way. There were only the 4 of us in the first class car.

The saver day pass is all you need. It is your ticket. And a printout with the QR code is all you need to show on the train (or bus or whatever). So get that, and you are set.
That you do not see it in the SBB app can be for all kinds of reasons. Did you create your account before buying the passes? I just bought passes for my parents for later this month, and they are visible in my SBB app. (They will use the PDF printouts though). I would however not waste time on solving this. If you have the printouts you are fine. It is all you are going to need.

Don't scrap the Bernina Express just yet. There are indeed ongoing engineering works on the Zurich - Chur line, but the direct Zurich - Chur IC trains are usually not affected. Hiring a car to drive you from Zurich to Chur is not going to get you there faster. Don't stress over this. October is still far away.

If you do choose to travel over the old Gotthard route in stead you can get that route by adding "Gösschenen" as a via in the trip planner. Because the Treno Gottardo alternates between originating in Basel and in Zurich that may involve another transfer (we don't call those "stops", that is something completely different), but that is not really an issue. You do not need reservations for the Treno Gottardo. That is just a normal regional service, used by locals to go about their daily business. That it is also marketed as a tourist train is common in Switzerland. This is just to get more passengers on that train so the company makes more money...

If you take that route to Milan you will need a ticket for the Chiasso - Milano part, as your Saver Day Pass is off course only valid in Switzerland. You can get that at the ticket office in Zurich before you leave if you want.

Relax. Don't overthink it. It is train travel, not rocket science. You'll be fine.

Thanks Sam. So would that mean a ticket booth when we're in Switzerland? I've never booked train tickets before and so I appreciate the help and suggestions. I worry because I don't want our family stranded or fined because I did something wrong. I'll keep trying to figure this out.

Treno Gottardo goes every hour, but alternates between starting in Zurich or Basel. If you start at one of the hours where it does not originate in Zurich you just take another train till Arth Goldau and change there. SBB.ch will show you.
With a Saver Day Pass you do not need to do anything special to take that train. Just print the pass out and have it with you. Then just travel. No need to visit a ticket booth.
