Ticketing for multiple trains/cable cars around Murren

We are staying 3 nights in Murren, Switzerland, and the Swiss Pass will not be used. I want to know if we get multiple or one single ticket for a destination, if our final destination involves a few or several modes of transportation. I am assuming one round trip ticket up to Schilthorn is sufficient for when go up there. However, when we arrive in Interlaken Ost, do I buy one ticket from the train station up to Murren, or do I have to break it up to include one ticket to Lauterbrunnen, and another (or more) up to Murren? This question also pertains to when we explore going to and from other villages, which will likely involve going down to Lauterbrunnen first.

Also, our train arrives Interlaken Ost at 16:30, then we make our way up to Murren. Most importantly, our train DEPARTS Interlaken Ost at 07:25 to Milan a few days later. Does the transportation to and from Murren still operate early/late enough to accommodate our arrival and departure. The lady at our hotel said yes so I booked the trains, but I want to double check or see if there are schedules for each cable car, train, etc. to/from Murren to know for sure.

You can look up all transport schedules including cable cars online at sbb.ch
https://www.sbb.ch/en/timetable.html
Interlaken to Murren would be one ticket but you have to get off at Lauterbrunnen to change

You'd be better off buying a Swiss Travel Pass 3 day instead of doing this piecemeal.

You buy a single ticket for the specific route, including connections. Some destinations can be connected by more than one route (e.g. Interlaken-Lauterbrunnen-Grutschalp-Muerren BLM train station or Interlaken-Lauterbrunnen-Stechelberg-Muerren lift (Shilthornbahn) station), so you must choose the one you want when purchasing. If a side trip across the valley seems complicated, buy the ticket from a live person.

The last departure from Interlaken to reach Muerren is usually around 23:00 on weekdays and midnight on weekends. The first morning departure from Muerren is around 6:00.

Where are you coming from when you arrive at Interlaken Ost at 16:30? Instead of buying a ticket to Interlaken Ost, buy a ticket to Muerren. Are you using a Eurail Pass? You do get a 25% discount with that, even for the Schilthornbahn.

On a quick check here, the earliest possible arrival from Mürren at Interlaken Ost is 6:53. You would take a first train 6:06 to Grütschalp, a gondola down to Lauterbrünnen and then the train to Interlaken Ost. Both connections are timed, and tight, but everybody is doing it. Just make sure you know the way on Lauterbrünnen station, so you don't roam around searching for the right platform.

If everything goes as planned, as it does >98% of times, you will arrive with plenty of time to spare in Interlaken Ost. If you, however, miss the train to Interlaken Ost, the second arrival of the day is 7.23. If such a thing happens, ask help to the conductor to pre-brief you exactly on where and how to run with your luggage to the 7.25 train.

This is a stressful connection in the sense you have a separate onward ticket from Interlaken to Italy. It is very likely you will make it.

Sam has it correct, you can buy a ticket from any of the 1838 stations in Switzerland to any other one of them. The number of trains and different rail companies involved is irrelevant - one ticket suffices.

So don't buy a ticket to Interlaken Ost, buy it from wherever-you-are-starting-from (Zürich Flughafen (airport) possibly?) to Mürren.

And look up train times on the SBB website: https://www.sbb.ch/en
Again, look up your complete trip, from wherever (Zürich Flughafen, Paris, Berlin, . . .) to Mürren. Let it tell you that you need to change trains in Interlaken Ost and Lauterbrunnen. You don't need to know this first

Our first time in Switzerland.. We are doing a similar exit from Murren next week. I had planned on the 6:36 (I no longer see a 6:06) out of Murren to get me on the 7:29 train out of Interlaken Ost (not 7:25) to Milan. I just confirmed this on the SBB site. That shows a 6 minute change in Interlaken Ost. I also plan on confirming things when I see where all of these stations are located in the different towns. But I assume Interlaken Ost is relatively small, so getting from platform 2A to platform 8 should be a quick walk. Are you sure you see a departure of 7:25? We are getting a Swiss Travel Pass so we can just jump on any train as needed, is that still an option for you?

There is a 06:06 next Tuesday, arriving Spiez 07:21, via 6:32 from Lauterbrunnen and 07:00 from Interlaken Ost (destination Basel).

Thanks Sam. We are coming from Milan (started in Varenna where we stayed a few days).
We did not get any rail pass because when I added up our travel days and costs, it was much less than any pass. I can't see our costs being over $230 each (or whatever the Swiss Pass price is).

To clarify for everyone, here is our train schedule to and from Interlaken Ost (already booked with tickets in hand):

sndemars, OK, so you already have a ticket as far as Interlaken Ost.
At Interlaken Ost, you just buy another ticket to your final destination (Mürren). This means going to the station building at the front of the station, and you may miss the next train up the valley to Lauterbrunnen. that is no issue, there is a train every 30 minutes.
Interlaken Ost to Mürren costs CHF 18.80

With hindsight, you could have bought a ticket all the way from Milan to Mürren, and saved this problem.

What you posted looks like it comes from a US website. Times are am/pm and dates are back-to-front US format. It may be that the website you bought your tickets from would not sell you a ticket to Mürren, but other websites (like SBB) will.
SBB is currently offering, Milan to Mürren, for the trains you list on 29/9/19, for CHF 107.

Hi Chris F.
Yes, the tickets were purchased from Rail Europe, which seems to have the am/pm schedules. We will be coming from Varenna, then going to Milan for our flight home the next day. When booking, I had to break up the trip because it wouldn't allow Varenna to Muerren. But I went ahead and got our 06:06 tickets from Muerren to Interlaken Ost on our way back, just to be safe, I just need to really check out the stations, trains, and tracks, so I know where we need to hustle to. We will just yell out our destination to whomever knows what is going on if it is too confusing.

Thank you all for your help! This really settled my anxiety regarding the logistics and having a Plan B.

I see from the printout that Rail Europe has gone sort of half way towards giving you the information you need.

When you are changing train it is very helpful to have the destination of the train you are connection to, because that is what will be on the screens and the yellow posters. It would also be helpful to have the platform you are coming in on and the platform you need to get to. And it would also be very helpful to have the service type - EC/IC/R/RE/ICE etc so you know what type of train to look for and what sort of seating to expect.

If you had used the DB for research it would have had all that except the platform numbers. If you had used the SBB it would have had that too.

If you have a data plan (or decent wifi on board from time to time depending on the type of train and tunnels) you can use the SBB app to track all that and keep you up to date with the progress of your train and the other ones, and how late - or not - they are, and late notice platform changes (unlikely but it happens for all sorts of reasons).

Hello Nigel. Thank you so much for your advice. My itinerary with the time we use in the US, and it shows the type of trains. Also, I thought I bought tickets from Muerren to Interlaken Ost on the SBB website, but it didn't go through. I tried different Visas that have worked for all of our train and hotel bookings. I have a message out to SBB customer service to see what the problem is. I wanted to get that 6:06 start from Muerren in case we miss a connection, and it might fill up.
