Three nights in Bern

I have been to Switzerland many times, but never to the capitol. I have three days. I am taking a morning train from Paris and then I want to see Bern and the surrounding area. Suggestions?

Explore Bern’s Old Town where you’ll find the Clock Tower and Einstein’s House. The Paul Klee Center has this contemporary artist’s work. The Histoical Museum is great as are the Botanical Gardens. If you want a couple out-of-town diversions, the medieval city of Murten ( about 35 minutes away by train) looks like it did 500 years ago. Fribourg is another historic town 30 minutes away by train.

The half day I spent in Bern was enough time for me. Is there nowhere else in Switzerland you’d like to go? Montreux? Wengen? Luzern? Zermatt? You could base somewhere else and take a day trip to Bern. I loved the Berner Oberland so much when I was there in Sept. that I’m going back next month. For me, Switzerland is the mountains. That's where I would want to be.

In addition to Kenko’s suggestions above we enjoyed looking at the Aare River floating activity. We especially liked going down to the river’s paved footpath and walking from the funicular near the bridge, past the Zoo to a nice restaurant right on the river’s edge in the embassy district. We stayed for three weeks in the neighborhood above this restaurant. There are easy to catch busses up the hill from the restaurant back to the city center. We used Bern as a hub to nearby Thun, Gruyère, Murten, etc.

The restaurant by the bear bridge and funicular is the Altes Tramdepot and Brauerei with nice views and food. It was recommended to us by a friend who used to live in Bern but now lives in Thun. The one on the river is Restaurant Fähribiezli. It was so warm in August when we were there that it was very refreshing to sit on the river bank and watch the floating river traffic. It’s about a 2 mile walk one way if you have the time and want to have a fascinating walk. We didn’t stay in a hotel but did a home exchange in a private home in the embassy district.

I enjoy going up the Gurten, Bern's own homegrown mountain. https://www.gurtenpark.ch/en/ The tram and funicular to get up to the top is included in your hotel provided free Bern transport ticket.

on the other hand,

Up by the Rose Garden is a great view, all the better if you are there in rose season. On the walk down to the Bärengarten you may find the Einstein seat. There's an Einstein museum too.

Not far from the Tramdepot mentioned above, hidden away around a corner and down below, is really neat shop window in a violin shop.

By the way, can you tell that I like Bern quite a lot?

You’ve received good suggestions for what to do in Bern. I agree that Murten is a nice trip from Bern; you can explore the medieval walls in a half day. Thun is also a 30 minute train ride and has interesting architecture, a nice market square, and multi-level shops along the Obere Hauptgasse, plus enjoyable walks along the Aare River before it flows into Lake Thun, which has a pleasant walking path with views.
