I am in charge of helping arrange travel for my large family group of 3 generations (ages 5 - 73). We have three days to use between Zurich and arriving in Salzburg in mid-June and I would so appreciate any suggestions. It would be ideal if someone identified a great small town in Graubunden we could use as a base camp to enjoy the outdoors (everything from hiking to sitting on a porch with a nice view would count) and that could best be reached by rail. We are spending 9 days in Austria after that and this is the "enjoy the mountains" portion before we are in Salzburg and Vienna. Thanks for any help and ideas! Being near enough to Chur to go there for a day would be nice as well. We do not need the fancy towns like St. Moritz :-).
brady Samedan or Pontresina would fill the bill, easily linked to other places around there. Pretty sleepy and not much to see but natural beauty.
Hmm. You might take a look at Appenzell. Not the real high mountains, but very scenic. Your hotel there will include a local transport pass for buses and trains to the area. It is not far from Buchs where you can pick up the Railjet to Salzburg. While Davos is not a particularly picturesque city, it is in the mountains and there are lots of summer activities. Many of the lifts are running for hikes in the mountains. Klosters is in the same area and has a lot of that Swiss charm. Might be a bit pricey. The British royal family has a chalet there. If Tom from Huettenfeld chimes in, he may have some ideas about Flumersberg. This is another place close to the Railjet line.
