We are staying there a week in October. Rick Steves' guide has given me plenty of ideas. Also check out the website MySwitzerland for info on the Lake Geneva region.

Lausanne is close to the lake, so not as many mountain activities in that area. In terms of scenery, if the weather is sunny you might enjoy a trip on the elegant old steam paddle wheelers to Château de Chillon. The views of the old castles and vineyards along the lake are awesome. After seeing the castle, you could do a brief walkabout in the posh city of Montreaux and then return by train to Lausanne.

I'd suggest having a look at the RS Switzerland quidebook, as there's lots of information there to find activities that appeal to you. If you're staying in Lausanne, you'll have to take the Metro (Funicular) down the hill to Ouchy to connect with the boats. I loved the Olympic museum, and the section of the waterfront right by the museum is gorgeous on a nice day.

I have not been to Lausanne unless you count going thru it via train. It is very close to Chateau Chillion which we enjoyed very much. You can take a train to Montreaux and then a bus takes you to the Chateau. Chillion is very interesting and the location is quite picturesque.

Lausanne is a city, but Roche de Naye and the Lavaux Vineyards are nearby. If you are near Chateau Chillon, directly behind it is Glion, which is a steep hike up but offers breathtaking views over lake and surrounding area. You can also take the funicular if you just want the views. The entrance is behind the bus stop at Territet, behind Chateau Chillon.
